Great post. I'm not much good with the spanners so taking my GTS cab in for an early change next week. Will have done about 1150.

My question: what did the oil look like when it came out? Did it make you feel glad you'd done the change? Head tech at my OPC looked at me like I was mad when I booked it in, but the guy at my local indy seemed to think it would be mechanically unsympathetic to do otherwise.

You're not going to "see" much with an oil change unless something is way off-spec. They only way to "see" something is with an UOA. See my post here to see what factory fill looks like after about the same mileage you plan to change at (smart move, BTW!):

Thanks! Guess I'm too used to bikes, where the oil can look pretty filthy pretty quickly...

I'm still looking for someone in the Los Angeles area with a Durametric tool.
I need to turn off my service light. Thanks!

If you are willing to make the drive, try 911 Design in Monteclair,Ca. They will charge you $60 to reset the service light.

This is the most important part of the oil change process to make sure all sealing surfaces are clean and the o-ring is undamaged and properly lubed and seated. A leak here will be difficult to detect and potentially catastrophic.

Thanks.
Difficult to detect because you won't "see" it leaking until it drips on the floor.
"Potentially" catastrophic because oil is flammable and your 911 boot is packed full of hot exhaust components!

Anyone know of a shop in the San Fernando Valley area who can reset the service light?

Changed the oil (Suncoast filter kit and Mobil 1 5w-50) for the first time yesterday on my 13 C4 after 4000 miles and it was black and nasty looking.

I'm just over 20,000 miles. Getting my 5th oil change done this Wednesday. I'll update my UOA thread in a couple weeks.

I'm staying with the Mobil 5W50. This will be the 3rd fill with that. Motul is also a very good choice. Both are Porsche approved.

Is consensus to start using 5W50 now instead of 0W40?

No. Not at all. Porsche recommends 0W-40. 5W-50 won't hurt anything, nor will it help anything. No need for this forum to stoop to BITOG type of inane oil debates among those who have no clue about oil.
