I owed a 997.2 GT3. Every time i drove it on short trips, you could not get the smile off my face. Absolutely thrilling to drive. I mean every mile was just amazing. Great Weekend car. But long trips 2+ hours we're taxing on my body. I now own a 991 S and I could drive it across the country in great comfort. The 991 is a good compromise for a daily driver. Just never get that huge adrenaline rush of the GT3. If its a weekend thrill you're after, there is zero comparison. You must get the GT3. Or wait for the 991 GT3, which could possibly be the ultimate mixture of comfort and thrill.

Almost every used 997.2 GT3 I'm looking at has a DME programming recall. Does anyone know more about this?

Could be an option if it will have manual transmission, otherwise I wouldn't even consider it.
But even so,the 991 GT3 is still far far away...

I've driven both -- both are amazing (but remarkably different) cars. It really just depends on the type of driving you enjoy and what you will primarily use it for, but I don't see how you could go wrong with a 991S.

It might be worth the wait.

Yes as the owner of a 997.2 GT3, this will be my choice. I have driven the 991 S and to me, particularly as a track driver, and I don't see any reason to change. That doesn't mean it isn't the right car for you. Drive both and buy what you like. Price wise a used GT3 should be less than a typical dealer spec new S. All the new 991 S Coupes my dealer is getting have stickers over $120K. There are even some used 997.2 RS' selling for that.

My disappointment with the new 991 isn't the steering, rather the price. I struggle with the thought of paying GT3 money for just a regular S. A typical dealer spec Carrera S Cab is now in the price range of a 997.2 Turbo. Something just seems wrong here.

For a weekend car, from a price point you can even find an RS. If not an option, again for a weekend car GT3.

If not DD, then GT3 for sure... specially since you want/like manual. The GT3 transmission, engine, sound, handling, and looks are just way too unique to pass up. You may actually like it too much to start tracking it!

PS. In terms of sound between the two, there's NOT even a comparison!

+1 on the price point... it's lunacy the kind of pricing the 991 has! They have kept the *base* price close to 997, BUT, the options quickly add-up and for a decent 991, you MUST add-up all of those options...

Got a GT3 for over a year. Awesome machine. Visceral, a bit more subdued than the RS. Not a comfortable car, but very usable anyway.

The mechanical, sensorial experience is very special. I have not driven yet the 991 I must say, but I'd guess that the choice depends on how you'll use it over the weekend.

As Nugget said, once you get it you really need to go to the track to get somewhat close to what the car can do. Very far from the performance envelope if driven only on the street.

However, for the pure feel of driving, I don't know anything better. I used to drive an M6, it was a limo compared to the GT3...

Either choice is fine... however I tend to agree that 991S is steep on the pricing....

All 997.2 GT3s/RS' have a DME service campaign (it is not really a recall). Just like your laptop's version of Windows, there are some minor bugs. Microsoft does service packs, Porsche does DME updates. For those of us who witnessed them, you get random warnings like "ABS Failure", "Traction Control Failure" and the eye opening "Oil Pressure Indicator" failure where your oil pressure gauge just stops working. The DME update is to fix many of the bugs. They did it on my GT3 a couple of months ago and I have not seen a single error message since it was done. It is no big deal. They do it for free and it takes less than an hour to update it.

Thanks 10 GT3!
This is really helpful!

It was done on mine too. I was told that it was related to ecu tuning for emissions. Car feels ok, maybe running a bit leaner?

Great Post Nugget! And good advice it was. Since selling my 993 GT2 TT and Dekon Monza Race cars, tow vehicle and trailer in 2005, I've scaled back my track activity to a DD and bought an '01 996TT which I traded for an 04 996 GT3. Deafening Tire, Road and Engine Noise plus a punishing ride made the 300 - 500 mile rides to the race track unbearable for my wife. Worst of all, my track lap times were no better in my GT3 than my Turbo and I sorely missed the huge Turbo Torque and a rocket acceleration. I changed back to an 02 996 X50 Turbo. As a frequent track instructor for PCA and many other clubs, I've driven student's GT-3s. The 997-2 GT3RSs and 997GT2s are hugely impressive on the track and a delight to drive. But I know that long drives would simply be far less comfortable in either of these cars.
With Porsche moving the Torque peak of the 991S 800 RPM higher than the 997 GTS Models, my test drive in the 991S with its 40 MPH / 1000 RPM normal high gear (for max MPG) left a very unresponsive, unsatisfying and limp throttle pedal in my usual 70-80 MPH cruising speeds. I feel most Turbo owners
will find a C2S or GTS 997 more satisfying as a DD.
