I have an Escort 9500ix installed in a 2013 991 with the power cord running to the hot spot in the passenger footwell [up high on the left]. It powers the unit fine, and automatically powers down from that hot spot after 10-15 minutes after the ignition key is removed so the detector shuts off. But, for your direct wire hook-up, check you detector's owners manual to see if it has an auto off setting, as does the 9500ix. The auto off setting is designed to deal with your issue. Good luck.

The Package Group on Amazon has nice mirror mounts and power pigtails.

Why do I need to go all the way to the fusebox when I can pick up 12 Volt at the mirror or overhead lights?

it can be done, but there is little space to work and you have to be fairly small or a contortionist to wire it up through the overhead console
