991 Sunroof?
Hello All,
Anyone have any info as to whether the new sunroof is glass? Is it still available in steel? I am wondering the design reasoning for it to slide up and back. It seem unlike Porsche. Lastly I am wondering about wind noise.
Thanks,

The new sliding roof is definitely steel, I've read that some expect it to be available in glass as a "panoramic" option. Not sure I like the look of it retracted sitting on top of the car - sort of looks like a retractable hardtop that got stuck! Tilted up should look OK, similar to the non-moving glass 944 roof option from a "few" years ago. I think this was done mainly to improve headroom.
Noticed in the German price list the sliding top is apparently a $1420 euro option. I hope people wishing for a sunroof delete option didn't convince Porsche they should start charging for a sunroof in a $100k car!

glass roof would be nice,
i like the panoramic in the cayenne but $1800 coupled with that ugly huge 6" flap in the front failed to sell me on it.. without the flap or eithout the 1800 i woud have been sol.d

I believe a sunroof will be an option on the 991, at least that's what my salesman has heard and told me. I can see it being placed in one of those dreaded "packages". Not sure what I'll do - I use mine once in a while, but not too much.

I wish the roof didn't slide up and back, but rather retracted like the previous 911 sunroof. I would even rather it overlap a little bit with the rear window.
Regarding sunroofs in the 911. I can't tell you how often I have used mine. It is terrific to have open on nice cooler fall days going for spirited drivers on country roads.
Cheers,

I think Porsche has found a way to save some money. The newer slide along the upper outside of the roof sunroof is a cheaper way to design these things. I saw an Audi A3 with a similar top yesterday. It also keeps the headspace unaltered--important for non-vertically challenged people.
It will, no doubt, be made of metal--but it could be made of aluminum instead of steel for weight savings. There is no structural need for the rigidity of steel there over the weight savings of aluminum.

Absolutely - saving money - and it looks cheap too - and bulky; non areodynamic - poor design in my opinion - just makes the 997.2s look all the better in my book! I can't imagine what the Targa design will be????

According to the Porsche web site, it doesn't take up headroom and allows for a much bigger opening. Whether that's worth the new "look" is a matter of personal preference. I will say that our Audi A3 has the "open sky" option which includes a similarly designed front sunroof along with non-opening glass over the rear seats. It's nice from inside the car; I don't have to look at the outside while I'm driving.

So was the rear seat delete in the GTS and that never made it to the U.S. Didn't this discussion on sunroof delete go on a while back - about how Porsche would have to certify a model w/o a sunroof for DOT requirements and chose not to do it? Would be nice though if it were true!
