The huge wheels look comical, once they're 20's and up, like it's from one of those toy car stores at the mall where kids assemble the car and pick out the wheels, etc. I despise that trend.

While I can understand a trend upward in wheel sizes when other factors enter the picture (e.g., growing brake rotor diameters), I can't see how a move from 19s to 20s is enhancing the handling enough to be justified. As it is, handling with my rears at an aspect ratio of 30 is pretty incredible. I wonder where the wheel sizes will finally stop. (It's like imager sizes on digital cameras--at a certain point no one needs to go above a certain size due to the physics involved).

+1

The rear is the 991's worst aspect looks wise. It's not bad, but a step backwards compared to the 997 IMHO. All other angles are good, but that one shot is fantastic.

OTOH, I think the 997 looks good from every angle.

I think way too much thought is spent on the increase in size of the 991 and claiming it to be a trend toward a more GT experience. I can't see coming to that conclusion unless you can ignore the last 40 years of the 911 development and all car development in general. I have had the last 4 versions of the air cooled cars and they were all more "GT" then the prior and the car grew in size as well. I remember the complaints that the 911 3.2 was so soft and not a real 911 when it came out because they added more climate controls (which never worked in either of my cars btw). It had fuel injection and power doors, what were they thinking!!!!!

This is all part of the evolution of the car and it's not new by any means and it isn't limited to Porsche. My Dad had a BMW 2002 which might fit in the trunk of my 2002 M5. Safety requirements are part of reason but every car maker makes larger cars now. Even the Boxster has grown in size, my 2003 S is smaller then the 2005 model.

I like to park my 3.2 next to a new model when I get a chance just to admire how small it is. Someday we are going to park a 991 next to a 2030 911 and think the same thing.

Cheers,

Emery

Just so that we don't forget the growth from a 356 to a 997!

nice one, Dan - ours cars are figgin' HUGE!

Gotta see the new car in the flesh, but when we do if we think more Panamera than we think 993, that's not good. I think the pictures look nice, just not sure it looks like what I think of as the quintessential 911 - even less than my car does which bothers me enough already.

Going to be more M6-like, except with mandatory sunroof, bigger wheels, and less HP.

Yeah the wheels in the latest pictures are HIDEOUS! Luckily the optional light weight wheels looks stunning!

And I agree with most that the rear doesn't look too great in that one picture, but its definetly just the angle and the lighting. Check these out!

Watching the 997.1 grow into a 991, I think it may be time for a Cayman. It's just losing the sports car feel and turning into a big luxury GT car like the Aston Martin. Then again maybe I'll just drop a 991 engine in my 996 and have the best thing about it.
Dropping the new DFI engine in your car is a great idea and will surely improve it - it will make it a great car! Have you any idea what that would cost?

All other feelings about the 991 aside, there is one aspect of the bodywork I cannot stand:

I think how they did (or rather, did NOT) integrate the front signals/lights into the rest of the front bodywork is atrocious. I can't help but think of a chipped tooth when I see it. I hope they restyle that in a future model year, because I think it looks ugly.

I saw some really cool wheels on a video - but these aren't them. Hopefully these (leaks) are just to get some loser copycats to "jump" in the wrong direction.

I think it's absolutely stunning. The most exotic looking base 911 to date. But my favorite thing about it is that it will drive down prices of the 997, which itself is no slouch in looks or performance.

Nice work Porsche!
