Default Clear sunroof?

Ok while I'm aware that many people would rather not have a sunroof, why are the sunroof's not made of glass or a clear material. Wouldn't that at least let light into the cabin without any degradation of cabin noise or would this make it even heavier still?
If you use your sunroof at all do you open it fully or just tilt it?
I know a few years back the Z3 Coupe/M Roadster's shipped with either no sunroof or a glass tilting (not retracting item).

Hope Porsche NEVER goes to a glass roof! I use mine in both open and tilt positions. Usually open it about 1/2 way to avoid buffeting.

I like the option,

Default Glass Sunroofs Are Heavy and Not As Strong

Glass sunroof would be heavier and provide less structural support. Bad things in a performance automobile. Cab is the best option for a clear sunroof.

What is less structural about a movable glass sunroof than a movable metal sunroof?

For the miniscule difference in weight, I 'd think a glass sunroof would be a nice feature to reduce the confining feeling inside a coupe. I loved the open feel of my Targa more than the fact that it was a sunroof too.

But I agree that the ultimate sunroof is a cab.

I don't think today's sunroofs are as good as they used to be on the 911. Buffeting is excessive from what I have seen in my limited play with a coupe. I guess I'm glad more so that I went all the way to a cabriolet! NEVER a glass roof! What would that be, a Lexus (aka Toyota??)

i only open it when i want some air in without the side windows open.. i infact do not like the sun that comes in with it because i wear glasses and refuse to get Rx sunglasses because i dont wanna carry around 2 pairs of glasses everywhere..

i do wish we could open 100% without the extra noise tho, the "first position" it goes to for no noise just looks like its not open all the way and then opening all the way requires you to lower a side window to avoid noise.

I'm probably not the best person to offer an opinion on this because if the delete-sunroof option was still available for 2009 I would have chosen it. Still, if I must have a sunroof I'd rather have steel than glass. Glass has some advantages, but I think steel gives the coupe a more unified look. If you want a more open interior there's the Targa or of course the Cab. At least the sunroof on my '09 doesn't rattle like the one on my '99 did. Oh, and when I do use it I open it fully.

Buffeting in my 997.2 is not bad. It was a problem in the 996.

This may sound strange from a Targa owner. I hate a sunroof. Or at least those small ones. I like the Targa but the whole roof is glass and opens up. The only bad part of Targa is restricted Back view but who looks back on a open road in a Porsche unless she looks nice

If I was ordering a coupe and a no Sunroof option was there it would be checked.

The glass sunroof in my BMW shattered, a frightening & dangerous event. Metal sunroofs only for me.

I drive 90+% of the time with the sunroof fully retracted. However, if I was given the option when I bought mine, I would have selected the delete sunroof option.

If I have a sunroof, I'd rather have a glass (isn't that technically a moonroof then?) rather than metal to let more light in the cabin and give it a more airy feeling. The incremental few lbs. is nothing and it's a much nicer experience. Plus my steel roof already creeks!

Unfortunately, the last four cars I have owned have each had a sunroof and none of them was ever opened while I was driving the car. I only opened them when I wanted to clean the seals while detailing the car.

My opinion of sunroofs is they 1) are useless, 2) add unnecessary weight to the car, 3) add complexity, and 4) most importantly, reduce headroom. In short.... "Sunroofs! We don't need no stinkin' sunroofs!" I would pay extra for a sunroof delete option.

Glass sun roof is essentially a piece of glass with a metal frame. Metal sunroof is an enclosed box structure. Enclosed metal box structure is more rigid and therefore more desirable from a torsional stiffness perspective.
