I just purchased this car in January 20 2025 and someone posted a breakdown of all the models from 17 through 19 and it shows that this targa 4 only 14 were built, but I was wondering how many were built in lava orange it seems to be a very popular color back then

Yeah they're are very few! I looked into mine when I bought it (2017 Lava 4GTS 7MT). They only produced 43 4GTS's in 2017, according to that little chart floating around. How many manual and how many LO? Who knows. Very pretty color, for sure. It compliments the car very well.
I've owned a 2016 Lava Orange Targa 4S for 5 years and have never seen another Lava 911 in this time, seen a few Cayenne. You'll get a lot of comments on the car/color... all good.
So nice to see two happy owners. Going back to 2018, when I agonized over picking a color, I think there was only dark blue, Miami blue, and a mahogany(?). Paint to sample was not available, If lava orange would have been on the list, I am sure I would have chosen it. Maybe a Canadian limitation. Anyway, I am very happy for you. Take care of those unicorns! Just having a Targa is a thrill that I cherish. May I suggest that you do your hardest to get 200,000 miles on the beast before that CPO warranty expires! You won't regret doing that on your death bed

been on a death bed a few times so i know exactly what you are expressing
Lava owner here. I think it's a naturally pleasing color to many people. People ask me about it all the time (way more than anything about the mechanicals or model). And even though its an off the shelf color in Porsche world, in the real world, it's quite unusual and gets a lot of attention. OP, great looking pony! Enjoy in good health!
As for production numbers, I've never seen a color breakdown. Production numbers of 991's is an interesting conversation. I often read comments (particularly in online auctions) about how a sub model of 991 or 992 is "rare." I think what we really see is that within a single model (the 911) Porsche made more than 20 varieties or sub-models. So any given flavor appears to be rare. And accentuating that is the fact that in 991 and 992 customers favored the models perceived as special over the choices more popular in 996 and 997 like the Carrera and S (I use parenthesis because Porsche and its clientele have fostered an aura of specialness and exclusivity around the T, GTS, and GT, but they are and were built more or less to demand, and for the T and GTS they represent option packages of the same chassis, and numbers are in line with the all the other subtypes, except Carrera 4 and Targa 4 which were sold in much lower volumes).
So, in an ironic twist, if rarity confers something special on a car, the Carrera 4 and Targa 4, which were produced in much lower numbers than T, S, GTS, or any of the GT cars, including the 911R, is the top of the heap. For comparison, I have a Silverado as a daily. When you look at Silverado sales numbers they are massive. If you look at 1500 Crew Cab, LT, Trailboss, with the short bed and 6.2L motor, we're down to a fraction of overall production, and on its own that number may actually look pretty small.
In sum, OP, you have a car produced in lower quantities than the legendary and exclusive 911 R!

THAT WAS VERY SPOKEN … educational to say the least thank you so much for that comment…. I know if my car model for that year were only 14 produced and that doesn’t make me hyped up about. Wow I have something rare in my hands because it’s a targa. . That’s all it is ….now if it was one of 14 produced of a 993 Turbo S with something else then I have something amazing… nonetheless I do like the purchase I made for the money I paid and getting a car that’s five years old or more with only 4000 miles and a two year CPO from PORSCHE including a full PPF( which I just took most of it off) lol …. I enjoyed this car.
I have a sapphire blue Targa 4. It replaced a totaled Cayenne GTS that was rare. Apparently, it was one of THREE painted the same sapphire blue. Wasn't a custom color, apparently just wasn't highlighted in any dealer literature thus no one knew it was orderable. Mads no difference when they totaled it though.

I also have a 2019 Targa 4 and have been looking for production numbers. What source are you using for the 14 count for that year? I believe the 14 was from the middle of the production run and I've been unable to find any information after that. If its truly only 14 sold in the US that's pretty rare cars we have!
I have a 2017 Lava GTS. Man I would love to swap for a lava Targa but alas. I was in the market for exclusively blues and preferably PTS. Fell in love with this Lava on BaT and got fortunate. Love it.

Being a Tennessee fan I wish I could have gotten orange, but didn’t want to take the time to find one. Glad to see someone taking off PPF! I see people all the time say “just picked up my new Porsche, going to PPF tomorrow.” Hugh waste of money.
