Default Apple CarPlay 991.2

Any advice on a reliable Apple CarPlay upgrade? Looking to transition from a wired CarPlay to wireless. I’ve tried three different wireless adapters and have yet to find a reliable one. I’m a DIYer and am willing to install new hardware to my PCCM.

I’ve been using my carlinkit for the past three years without issue.

Have had Carlink gizmo in two successive 991.2s. Zero problems.

I use ottocast box and it works great.

One thing I think all of the wireless to wired CarPlay adapters suffer from is that the console usb port is powered for about 10 minutes after you turn car off and exit. This presents 2 potential problems. Your phone will not join a wifi network until it loses the connection to the car (via car power down or signal strength), and secondly, if you run into a store, etc and get back in your car within that 10 minute period, your phone will not do the carplay properly. In the second case, I reach into console and unplug/plug the box back in …

if other boxes don’t do the second issue I mentioned, please let me know as I hate that. The first issue is not a problem for me as my office is opposite corner from my garage and I lose signal to carplay by distance.

My local dealer saw my CarPlay immediately started up and thought I had something done to the PCM. He was surprised when I showed him the dongle, making it so simple. I honestly almost forget it’s there since it works pretty much like wireless CarPlay works in my other cars. The recent firmware updates seem to have added better and faster connectivity.

@c1pher : How does your unit react in my step away far enough to lose carplay connection but get back into car within that 10 minute window when the console port is still powered?

carlinkit works great but keep in mind your car will keep the USB on for like 20 minutes and will fight your phone for the Wi-Fi connection after you get out of the car you should turn your Bluetooth off and turn CarPlay off on the phone or you’ll run into trouble

I have two of these I purchased from Amazon:CarlinKit 5.0 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter,Online Update,Two Channel Connection, Plug & Plug, for Cars with OEM Wired CarPlay & Android Auto(2016-2024)
They work fine. When you first get them you will find they are a bit slow to connect sometimes but they always do.

Good luck.

just replace the PCM, the screens on these units are much nicer and more responsive https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1045...r-991-1-a.html

I second that! There's a lot of community support on that thread and the latest units look great. We have an installation guide to help people set everything up.

See here for pics of the very latest successful installation

starting to get a bit disillusioned with this Ottocast U2Air Pro unit.

I can tolerate the inadvertent startup/connection that others are experiencing (like if I open the door, it activates the USB port), but the sound quality through the unit really degrades after a time.

Not seeming to be any cause and effect that I can discern, but sometimes it just gets distorted/staticky. (Not trying to stream hi-res stuff, just dumb old podcasts.)

If I take the ottocast out of the chain and just connect the phone directly via USB cable to the armrest port, it sounds perfect.

Anyone finding this? I'll do some digging and see if this is commonly reported.

Kind of a bummer.

Question for the CarLinKit users...

Is the 5.0 the one to get? Also, does this just plug into the USB inside the armrest and sit in there, or is there some other installation work involved?

ALSO... I'm thinking of going with one of these and adding a magsafe charger where the ashtray is, either the Kaizen or the Nine Volt one. If anyone has done this setup, would love to hear any feedback.

I thought about the ashtray magsafe thing, but with a manual transmission, I know that placement would make me nuts when shifting,

I put the rennsport magsafe charger here, snaked it under the side panel and plugged it into the passenger footwell USB port.

I’m currently using the car link kit 5.0. I leave mine plugged in. The set up is pretty straight forward, all done through your phone and the car’s touchscreen. It’s practically automatic. I also have the nine-volt ashtray MagSafe. That’s also an easy install. Basically just plug in to the cigarette lighter, fold the cable underneath the MagSafe, snap it in place. I believe there’s a YouTube instructional video to view. The only issue I have is I sometimes knock the phone off with my elbow. The phone can only mount in one direction really.
