Default 991.2 ticking?

Please see video below. I get this ticking noise coming from one side. Not a heat shield. Appears to be coming from the turbo or cat. Any ideas?

car feels good otherwise. No warning lights.

Thanks!

Time to upgrade the turbos, just in case, need to make sure it isn’t turbo failure, so the only thing that makes sense are a set of M800’s to diagnose the problem …

The noise is a very high-pitched tick and not the normal sound I hear from valve lifters on previous generation 911s.

Curious to find out what the issue is.

So hard to diagnose from sound clips over the internet but here are my guesses...

First thought as above is a loose fastener or screw somewhere on the exhaust. Could be from somewhere else too.

But it also almost sounds like an air leak I would think as well coming from exhaust. Almost like a bad seal or gasket or something. Is there any way to get your hand up in there without getting burned to see if you can feel some pulsating air?

Kind of like this maybe???

While @MingusDew was joking I think, he might not be far off. It could be the wastegate flapper valve is loose from the arm at which point you would need a new turbo. Or maybe the wastegate actuator arm lost it's retaining clip and is loose. I'm kinda leaning towards loose flapper valve though which will require taking the sport cat off to check. Though seems it's early life failure which could potentially be covered by warranty.

This is the valve for reference. It's has to tabs to prevent rotation which keeps the valve from machining itself off from spinning too much. But what could have happened is the stem that goes thru the small washer and gets mushroomed riveted for retention, that stem may have stretched and now the valve is a bit loose. Eventually, it'll fail and end up in the cat.

One last thing to check is that the vacuum line to the wastegate actuator isn't loose. Hmm. Does the noise go away if in sport mode? Sport mode should hold the valve shut which would prevent the rattling noise. Vacuum is required to hold the actuator shut, so if no vacuum, the valve will be open and potentially rattle.

Welders glove and hold the various bits.

Rev engine while listening.

Mechanic stethoscope on each bit.

Tap bits with small hammer to see if anything different side to side.

Let cool and squirt WD40 on each bolt and place where brackets touch and let soak.

Motor mount or suspension?

this is exactly it. Turbo needs to be replaced.
Thanks for the input!

Do you have a picture of the failed part? I'm curious how bad it was.

After a mere 21K miles? I wonder what failed in it?

If you do change turbos please do a video of it. Your videos are great!

Wow, that's a weird failure for the mileage. Good work by spdracerut flagging to check that!

How did you ultimately diagnose?
