^ A common misperception, as a NB 991 is the same width as a 997, ~0.1 inch lower, and ~1.5. inch longer iirc.

Another change from 997 to 991 was moving the engine forward compared to the rear axle. I believe it moved 7cm. This resulted in the weight distribution going from 38/62 to 42/58 or something like that.

This is nearly mid engine car weight distribution.

I am an old-timer... and for those you who remember who Bruce Anderson was and what he always preached... "Buy the newest Porsche you can afford". Sound advice then -- sound advice now.

So, I'm a newbie ...

I wanted a NA 911 cab with PDK - so, 991.1 was the answer. Got one of the two colors I wanted (white), with one of the three interior colors I wanted (beige).

Again - I WANTED a naturally aspirated engine - I WANTED to hear it.

I have been one of those seeking to have the 991 series split on reenlist - mainly for convenience of search and applicability of noted topic ... BUT, and it may simply be because there are more 991.2s out there, but it SEEMS like the 991.2 has more threads with various issues - COULD just be a mistaken impression, though?

If you're coming from an e46 then you'll get this.

991.1 (2013-2016) = NA V8 M3
991.2 (2017-2019) = Turbo 6 M3

The same split of people for each, but all depends on which M3 you always prefered. I went for a 991.1 (and paid 991.2 money for the right one). The bigger NA motor might not be as fast or modify-able but it's a "real" 911/M3 IMO.

PS the Porsche PDK is NOT like the SMG. The SMG was and is the worst trans in my opinion. I have a PDK now (my first ever) and have zero regrets. Better for daily and for track, but the stick will always have a little spot in my heart.

i don’t think that’s a good comparison, 991.2 is the better engineered car period. And imo with hi flows and and any exhaust is the better sounding car to me. like the 911 turbo/gt2 isn’t a “real” 911of any generation because they have turbos. lmao or the better portion of Porsches race history is in turboing cars. 935k 962 (917 most wins for Porsche) 930 993 gt2. I absolutely despise when people try and act like Porsche is only NA and isn’t a real 911 if it’s not NA. But 991 NA still gets destroyed by a kid in a ford fiesta lol.

If i remember right a lot of the complaints were from the increase in wheel base 3-4 inches. Many had said the 991 was a better car but not a better 911 due to it handling more "mid engine" like and removed from the rear engine biased setup.

BMW guys refer to the V8's as the "real" M3's vs the newer ones, regardless of being better engineered. That's why that was used as well. It was an example to show how .1 and .2 guys will look at each version compared to the same view from the BMW guys on their end. I've owned an '08 and '15 M3 along with some others so it was my outlook on it too. I've also owned a 991.2, but currently have a 991.1 . I was actually invited and attended the official 991.2 unveiling by Porsche back in when it was blasphemy adding a turbo to a non-Turbo trim car, and I was the first to say I wanted one. I the nicest way possible, save the history lesson . No triggered screaming needed.

and to me the Porsche NA motor IS the real 911 motor. You don't have to agree or despise others that don't. I appreciate and respect your perspective 100%. That's why we're all here right?

.1 and .2 are both wonderful cars. as were all previous gens. love my .1 S but have NEVER hated (or even disliked) any generation of 911's

that being said...i'll be all over a 992 when the time is right. after driving one, i believe it's the best 911 yet (imho)

The consensus I see on the forums is that people complain about how the car gets bigger and more "Grand Touring" vs sports car. Happened from the 997 - 991 and from the 991 - 992.

But IMO they are all wonderful car and the big consideration is do you want an NA motor or Turbo in Carrera form and obviously budget and size. I found that it was interesting that although the 911 has a larger footprint than the 997 it's actually lighter.

991 was a complete redesign, a new car. They got a lot right, missed a few marks, but nothing overwhelming. I was recently forced to be shopping for a new car. I tried the turbo cars, but I wasn't convinced. I went back to the 991.1 in the end. Yes the torque was appreciated, but in the end, it is up to the feel of the driving experience for me.

991 as a whole is the GOAT 911 generation. IMO. That's 991.1 and 991.2.

Every gen has it's sweet spots and unique touches without a doubt.
