How does the 996 or 997 NA sound in comparison to the 991.1 NA?

I had a 997.1 C4S, modded with Dansk mufflers, GT3 TB, BMC air filter, Numeric shifter and cables, FVD tune. If you want loud and wanted to hear it sing, that was the ticket…but after a six hour or more drive across the mountains of WV, in the rpm’s….my ears were ringing and I had a headache. But I’ll tell you, carving the mountain roads, with no traffic, was fun and wore me out. Then after a CTS V coupe, went to a 997.2 C4S….with BMC filters and Fabspeed x pipe, stock mufflers….sounded nice but did not match the wail of the 997.1. But that was on purpose. Now in a 991.2 C4S, and yes I’d like a bit more growl….so I’ll add a FVD exhaust to it. I don’t have PSE, if I did I’d leave it alone. I get that loud and singing exhaust is nice to hear…but for me at 60, I’ve been there and done that enough. The loudest was the V with Corse exhaust…..it was a brute. Now that I think about it, the best may have been my B6 S4 with APR high flow cats and exhaust. Not too loud and had enough growl to keep me happy. Should have kept it, but the thought of a 10k repair bill to fix the tensioner guides made me get rid of it.

Is anyone aware of a 991.2 with a Gundo hack? I'm seriously considering doing it to my non-PSE .1 C2s.

Default This... I have a 22 grand cherokee

That you would swear is running a 10 second quarter mile from the sound and feel. Nice cushy ride but more dramatic than a prom queen when trounced upon. Dodge has a thing for this, the gt350 actually made a great sound and was fast but oh those poor pedestrians.

That Mercedes wont feel fast when the slower feeling 400hp-430hp 991.1 is pulling away from it.

A 991.2 base with 370hp will easily pull away from a same year camaro SS in a drag race with ease. Drive both back to back and you'll swear the Camaro SS is faster. Base 991.2 will pull away from V8 Audi R8. Base 992s pull on 495hp C8 corvettes. My 991.1 C4S destroyed an NA V8 C63. All the latter cars feel faster.

Turbochargers solve a LOT of ICE limitations.

I don't like them in cars.

North American T-28 ... nothing has been scary since then 😎

To be clear, the Wright R-1820 was supercharged, then one shifted into stage two as altitude increased.

Good writeup ... https://marcliebman.com/flying-my-mo...time-the-t-28/

I had a 997.2 (2009 Base Carrera) and it never really gave great aural. I did the gundo hack to open it up and that improved things a bit but it never really tingled the spine. The 991.1 really sings - and it’s a tuneful song too. Porsche put a lot of effort into getting the tone right on the 991.1 and when equipped with PSE, it’s up there with the greats. It’s a special car that I don’t think I’ll ever let go of. The PSE is my happy button.

Times change. Audi went from V8's to smaller turbo's, AMG did the same, and so on. Now it's the electric hype. Make no mistake, I spent a lot of time and money working on big-turbo cars, but when you stop chasing that HP number and start looking for a better experience, you start going back to those pure NA cars. Yes, you can make higher numbers on a graph with less money with a base turbo'ed 911. I look at the little turbo (due to emmissions) cars and electric cars like microwaves... Yes, you can put a steak in a microwaves and get it done much faster, but who wants a microwaved steak?

Look at the Ford GT's. The new ones are cool looking, but with a tiny v6 ecoboost. No comparison to the experience of the 60's and 00's GT that are more analog with big V8's.

I guess that is why Porsche went back to a normally aspirated six-cylinder 718 GTS 4.0 from the previous four-cylinder turbo'd 718 GTS.

Now that would be a waste of a steak and I do not want my car sounding like a damn sewing machine either.

Come to think of it, when VW bought my diesel back due to Dieselgate, I snapped up a new 2017 Acura RDX (2nd gen) thinking it was the last year of the normally aspirated 3.5L V6 engines before they went back to the I-4 turbo (3rd gen) which didn't happen till 2019. The 1st gen RDX was also an I-4 turbo engine.

I just permanently moved to Shenandoah Valley , 15 minute drive from Skyline drive and finally had the opportunity to take a long drive.

With Soul Sport headers, PSE and the glorious .1 GTS N/A engine matted with the 7 Speed and Numeric internals, the experience, the drive, the feel was nothing short of sublime.. but all that was overshadowed by the Intoxicating and echoing sound of the N/A engine. Oh My Gid, what a Gem!!!!!

I must say that sounds good on its own accord, but very similar to the in car experience of my buddies Soup'd up Subaru WRX STi.. it shouldn't be a bad thing, they all sound great.. it just doesn't sound like a "911" to me.

I have a '23 GT3T coming in about a month now but am really having second thoughts about parting with my 991.1 GTS. Latter is such a good weekend car and so user friendly. I'll be really interested to compare the exhaust note as I think the touring's GT department normally aspirated engine has been further muffled with a particulate filter. I bet there is a good chance that the GTS will sound better at least at low RPMs. Also a little worried about the sport buckets for longer road trips. I know some guys here have both cars/seats and it is quite a personal thing.
