I am curious if the debate over turbo or NA sound occurred in 1975 when Porsche rolled out the first Turbo? I shopped the 991.1 for two years, about 7 or 8, (C4, CS, C2) test drives and was underwhelmed. The sound was the last thing I was considering when it felt slower than the Mercedes I was looking to trade. One drive in a 991.2 manual and it was bye bye Merc.

My 991.2 TTS feels slower in the seat with 700whp+ than most sports cars but it absolutelty dusts said cars. The chassis refinement compared to other sports cars is unmatched. A main reason why 911s lap so well. 991.1 and 991.2s were winning car of the year awards year in and year out.

That Mercedes wont feel fast when the slower feeling 400hp-430hp 991.1 is pulling away from it.

A 991.2 base with 370hp will easily pull away from a same year camaro SS in a drag race with ease. Drive both back to back and you'll swear the Camaro SS is faster. Base 991.2 will pull away from V8 Audi R8. Base 992s pull on 495hp C8 corvettes. My 991.1 C4S destroyed an NA V8 C63. All the latter cars feel faster.

Truth be told, on a test drive, the salesman never said to thrash the damn thing. And none of my 911 owning friends said to let it rev. Any V-8 like my twin turbo Mercedes has tons of low end grunt. At any rate, I dropped it at the dealer 6 years ago and never looked back. Could not be happier with 991.2.

I could just add, most of us will never reach the maximum performance envelope of our cars. So, just enjoy the car you love, wash it, coddle it, but don't make useless comparisons with other Porsches. They are all great drivers, so just enjoy what you have.

Try over 99% or we'd be seeing their names holding records on the Nürburgring. Besides going fast in a straight line is no big deal, it just takes horsepower. Its the braking, turns and coming out of them where the difference lies.

Meh. No offense to the 991.1 purists, but the only NA 911 I’d buy these days is a GT3 Touring with a manual.

I’m happy with the sound of my uncorked turbo 9A2:

As a 991.1 owner I love the NA motor because of its throttle response, sound, and power delivery. That said I don’t think these cars will appreciate as 993s did because they are far more common and as we move to electric cars I suspect only the rarest fossil fuel vehicles will appreciate. Moral of the story: drive the crap out of your 911.

I think Porsche pulled it off perfectly. They made enough 991.1 cars for those who want them, then went on to capture the ones who wanted a faster car with the 991.2. They are masters of supply and demand.

For myself, not a terribly skilled driver, only drives on the street (oh to have the time to go do track days), I love how "slow" the 991.1 is. I love the feel of the shifter (especially after dropping in the Numeric), the response of the engine. I love that you can floor it and not be doing 100mph, which will make perfect sense to some people and sound horrible to others.

I had a Mini Cooper S manual which I loved, scrappy little thing but you could really push it and it was fun. I went from that to a manual S4 which was a superior car in every way but after a bit I realized it was already too much car. Already silly fast. I knew I had to get the last of the slow 911 versions before the turbo upgrade. Even sound is subjective--I much prefer the sound/feel of the non-turbos, but I won't argue someone who prefers the sound of the turbos. To each his/her own. It works out nicely because it keeps supply and demand in check. Drive what you love, we're all 911 fans.

devolving into a .1 vs .2 fight club again.

here's a few potentially upcoming barbs:
.1 "enjoy your dyson"
.1 "enjoy your non-linear acceleration curve"
.2 "enjoy your slow, barely-upgradeable NA motor"
etc. etc. etc.

happy thanksgiving

Ya gots to ask yourself, why did I buy a used 2015 991.1 GTS in 2018 that came with a ton of factory options and XPEL and with only 98 miles for far more money than I could have spent on a new 991.2?

Choice! Its that simple.

Oh and by the way, I have driven the 992 Carrera S with PDK on the track in 2021 and 2022. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, but they are not my choice and certainly not with PDK, plus I do not like glass instrument panels a-la-Star Trek, but then I am older. LOL

can't say the turbo cars sound or feel "bad" like others seem to think. have driven them many times and enjoyed it every time. can say i much prefer the sound/feel of the NA cars.....like my 13 C2S =)

My manual .1S won’t be worth schitt when I’m done with it. 90k flawless miles so far and will be completely refreshed when the time comes (probably somewhere around the 200k mark). I have no interest in a .2, 992, or any form of hybrid/full EV. It’s a nice place to be knowing I’m driving THE fun car that suits me perfectly.

I would have bought a Turbo S if I needed faster 0-jail/dead times.

These discussions are entertaining if nothing else. Love the passion. I’ll give you one more perhaps interesting observation. It may be in my head but when I run my C2S just after taking it off the CTEK, it seems to be little more zippy. I also don’t feel the lag especially when doing the Autocross in sports plus. And who doesn’t like launch control or the insanity button?
