Default 911 dilemma

Hi All,

I am seriously torn on what to do here and wanted insight from those that might have been in a similar predicament.


My wife and I just purchased a to-be-constructed townhouse downtown (great walkable location with high future value potential / eventual rental opportunity). Previously we have lived in the suburbs with ample parking for our 3 cars. This new place won’t have a parkable driveway and only a 2 car garage and ceiling height looks to be about 10’ so I am highly doubtful I can get a lift in there. Another thing weighing on me is that we plan to have a baby (our first) in the next year or so.

My 911 Carrera T has the carbon buckets and manual (so not practical for a baby and wife can’t drive it). She has a Panamera e-hybrid that she loves so that’s not going anywhere. My other car is a Volt which is a great runaround.

I have been considering a few options that would include me getting rid of both of my cars for a single replacement.

1. Stay with a 911 (either a 992 S or GTS) and go PDK and struggle with a baby seat but have my 911.

2. Stay with Porsche and go for the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo - will be outfitting new house with 2 240V outlets in the garage regardless of what car I get. Just worry about buying into EV’s so early, tech is ever evolving and wouldn’t want huge depreciation/early adopter remorse - also worried this would bore me after a while.

3. Go with a new RS6 (ordered one on a whim this weekend but no clue if they will ever get an allocation, no ADM or deposit needed which is nice). Will hold value well, and would go for a custom color. Heavy but the most practical and cheapest option (though not by much).

I have a while to figure this out (house won’t be ready until October). But I would aim to sell the T in the spring most likely and would want to solidify my plans soon. Has anyone else been in a similar predicament?

Obligatory T image - love this thing but it’s not getting much use (only 11k miles, 2018). And a couple of the color I ordered for the RS6, with a tan interior (James bond style )

I have been you before. I also have a manual T with carbon buckets. Before having kids we lived in a townhouse and had a Cayman S. We sold it. That was a mistake.

First, exercise patience. A baby is at least 9 months away; probably a year or more away. You have time.

I believe you should resist the urge to find the “do-it-all” car. I tried. My car friend guys tried. We all failed. An RS6/M3 is as good as a do-it-all as you’ll find. An RS6/M3 is no Carrera T. What you love about the T doesn’t exist in an RS6, and the RS6 is redundant with the Panamera.

I may be very biased, but a Carrera T with a manual and carbon buckets is far more interesting and fun than any other 911 with a rear seat.

Keep the T, street park the Volt, and find a way to make it work.

Make sure the lift is not possible. If not, get rid of the Volt, the 911T is not replaceable. And for heavens sake, don't make a move until you are sure the new house is a 100% go, and move in is assured. The Panny will be ok to transport the baby, or maybe upgrade that to a Cayenne or Cross Turismo when you need more room.

My kids are grown and gone, but all my adult life I've driven two seat cars or at least unusable back seats. When I needed a back seat we used the wife's car. I see nothing wrong with keeping the T and the Pano. Sell the Volt. With the continuing EV revolution your T will quickly become a classic.

I say sell or trade the T in on another 911 with a back seat. Maybe even another T.

There are some cars that you will always regret selling. For example I sold a Cadillac CTS-V wagon with a 6-speed…I’ll never have a car like that again. The T is one of those cars in my opinion. As echoed above will definitely feel compromised if you love your T, therefore I’d find a way to make it work. The V-8s will be around in the used market for a while but finding your T again won’t. I have 5 young kids so we have a minivan and a GL350 diesel as our other vehicles. The T with buckets is awesome for spending quality, memorable, and interesting one on one time with the kids. After one year where I live the kids can be front facing which means they can sit beside you on a drive. Hopefully you can find some on street or driveway or even vehicle storage or the lift will work to be able to have 3 vehicles. All the best on your decision. Sold my 21 RS6 and bought a 991.2. The RS6 is an amazing car, just brutal in every way and there wont be a time you don't enjoy it. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, it was similar in driving dynamics as my Previous 2019 Panamera which was fantastic but it didn't scratch a certain itch. The 911 isn't as practical (at all) or honestly as nice of a car but it inspires so much more emotion and joy for me. We have a "strategy" in our home that you might benefit from, my wife has a Macan and whenever we need to go somewhere with our kids we take that, when its just me and her, or just me I take the 911.

Wow some great insight, I love the car I am seriously torn still. The most ideal scenario is work with the builder to eek out a few extra inches of height in the garage (some units get as much as 11' which could allow for a lift just barely), and then I can keep both cars and the whole debate is moot.

No doubt a 911 will have more cache than an Audi, regardless of the RS moniker or not. But we do get inclement weather here (had about 5 inches of snow a few weeks ago) and we don't have any family in the area, at least yet, so we wouldn't have the luxury of having family take a kid for a day. Another problem with 911 as an only car is that my job requires me to take my products in the car from time to time, and so I need some level of space to carry large boxes (911 doesn't work for that), but I guess that's something my assistant could help with...),

Another thing that bothers me is that my wife can't drive the T, nor does she like being a passenger, too rough for her and she hates the carbon buckets (not comfortable). So it's a 1 person, one driver vehicle and I have a hard time justifying that sometimes. And my wife is a nurse that works 13hr shifts so I don't always have access to her Panamera if I would need it.

Open to other suggestions for vehicles too, I just think the RS6 would be a great performer with comfy ride and great tech and be something my wife would like to drive from time to time. Sat in one this weekend and seems to be a good place to spend time.

Again not in a big rush to do anything, but the market value in the spring should stay strong on the 911's and thinking it would probably go for $110k+ which would be a bit more than I paid.

My wife think's I'm crazy and my big fear is regretting selling the 911, which I probably would, and I definitely am (crazy).

Wife not being able to drive is a blessing not a curse…It’s such a blessing that I ended up getting a cayman s PDK for my wife to ensure it stayed that way and worth every penny! To quote my wife, “ever since you sold your sports car [Cadillac CTS-V Wagon] you’ve lost your spark, you need to buy another sports car, you love the 911T so please get one”. Y ah my wife is a keeper but women can recognize regret from a mile away.

I'm not seeing the problem here. You have a T manual, and a Panamera that has four doors and back seating. What is the 3rd car? Get rid of the 3rd car. You have your car, your wife has her car, baby will be with wife... no problem I see.

Don't sell the T. Street park the Volt. And, (my opinion here) if your job requires you to take products in your personal vehicle you are well within reason to ask for them to lease you something.

Another alternative is to find a local mini-storage that can serve for the T. My uncle has kept a variety of 60s muscle cars in storage over the years while working on them / enjoying them. Has worked well. That way you just pop over to the storage unit in your Brand New Cayenne when you need to scratch the "T" itch! :-p

Keep the current fleet and get a 4 post hoist to stack the 911 and the Volt. You’ll regret selling the 911 very quickly and a hoist is cheap.

Make sure you have them install the garage door rails as high up as possible with a side mounted opener, you’ll need that for a lift.

I voted sell the T for a 992. If your having a child the back seat of the 992 will be a great option. While of course it's not ideal in any instance over a four door it at least provides you an option. There will always be that day if your kid is at day car and your wife is unable to get him or her. Not only that you can enjoy your 911 with your baby and the whole family on a trip out if you desire. I do say wait for the new T to be released though. I am currently waiting for it as well. I would just hold on to your current car till it's released especially since your not expecting yet,you have plenty of time.
