I added the wireless Apple Car Play dongle (carlinkit3.0) to my 991.2, and I wanted wireless charging too.
I had built a wireless charger for my last 997.1, and really liked having it as using CarPlay can kill a battery quickly.I use a small 12v -> usb-c inside the cigarette lighter socket. It's designed for a stock and unmodified Apple magsafe charger.
There are ZERO mods to the car. Simply flip the ashtray lid up, pop the power supply in, plug in the charger within the new housing, and snap it in place. Done.
This looks great, better than anything I've seen anywhere online for a wireless charging solution. You say this is just a prototype, be sure to post pictures of the finished product.
I find the PCM software in the 991.2 the best I’ve ever seen. For example, 2 phones can simultaneously hook to the system. Even if one is active, if a call comes in on the other, one can see it and answer it.
But..you loose this with car play. Hence I like to use it only wired and won’t go wireless. My wife’s edge has the wireless charging. It’s nice but only does one phone.
Maybe I'm wrong but you should not give these away. Porsche people have the funds to reward nice guys with great ideas. At least let people donate to your materials & research fund.
After an overwhelming response, I set up a spot for those that are interested to order from. I'm doing these pretty much at cost, but I needed a single way for everyone to order - PM's, emails and posts were getting way out of hand.
Got mine in today! Huge thanks to @brockbr for coming up with this idea-fit to the car was excellent as was the design. I ended up purchasing the usb-c charger he recommended, the apple MagSafe charger and the car link kit as well-all work great! On my particular unit, there was a bit of leftover plastic slag where the MagSafe charger sits into (inside the circle) that would not allow it to sit. I had to trim it with a blade and the charger fit well (ended up causing me to make a small fracture where the wire goes to the charger while initially trying to fit it in-but not noticeable. Once in-it flows well and looks great! I am weird and didn’t care for the 3D printed lines-although they were done well, I wanted it to match the rest of the center console buttons more so I refinished mine.
