You can always take the climate control out and clean the buttons. Once you get past the initial fear factor, of removing and disassembling, it is actually relatively easy. Initial fear factor 10/10, actual disassembly and reassembly 4/10
You would be surprised how many of us here have Ultimate Cupholders who feel the exact opposite...I think they work well in the interior:
You have done such a great job customizing that car... I never was a fan of the minor exterior color bits on interiors, but going all the way like this just really pops and makes it special. its such a great blue.
I use the cup holder constantly and have never had a problem. But, I never trust them except in a straight line while cruising. In fact, I've never trusted any cup holder in any of my cars. They are just a bit more secure then setting a bottle on a flat table.
On a side note, a close friend has a C8 Corvette and we took turns driving each others cars. After driving mine and playing with the features he said "Nice car, but it doesn't have any cup holders!". I popped them out and he was so impressed. He actually said that it was the coolest thing that he had ever seen in a car. Kind of a letdown, But he's an Aggie engineer, so I got over it.
Another suggestion for an alternative to the built ins is the “Nurburgring” cup holder from T-Design. Looks fine, especially in a black interior. More importantly it’s very secure, which is how I like my cups of black coffee to be when driving a 911. Zojirushi has a 15oz tumbler that fits perfect. It’s a bit on the expensive side at $130. Installation takes about 5min with a trim tool and T20 bit.
I understand the Porsche tax, but that's ridiculous! It's cheaper & easier for me to just ban beverages in my 911.
What some people see as Porsche tax is really just costs of super-low volume production. Making something tailor-made for one model of the car with lowest sales#s in the world, and with quality that will get approval of the most demanding customers in the world... It just can't cost the same as product that can be sold in qty's of 100000s .
How the hell do you pull your drink out from under your leg every time you want a sip? I mean, yeah it is possible. But why? My factory cup holder works just fine. Maybe not for a jumbo big gulp. But a bottle of water or a coffee cup is no problem. I have never understood all the disdain for the factory drink holders.
To the OP, sounds like a malfunction. Never had a problem putting them back in place and I use them all the time.
My Ultimate holder sits directly below my knee. Whether in motion to stopped I have to move my leg about an inch to the left, reach down, and grab the mug. That reach is much easier than the stock holder.

I would bet if that all of the Ultimate Cupholder naysayers tried them they would realize what those of us mean when we say they work perfectly, do not get in way, etc. The last thing I want is a drink sticking out of my dashboard, especially when the car is moving.

Fair enough. You're obviously not using crap materials & your lower production volume would result in a higher cost. Thanks for pointing that out.
I bought this off of Amazon for $2.50 and mod'd it to fit. Because it's black, you really don't see it from outside the car and it can be easily accessed by either driver or passenger and will hold a water bottle with non tapered sides. The OEM holders are directly in front of the air vents so both block the air flow and amend the temperature of the drink receptacle. Oops, looks like it's time for another interior detail...
