Default Radio swap

Hey guys,

long time lurker, first time poster.

I just bought my 1st 911 (black/black 2012 991 Carrera S w/38k miles) this weekend. Put 200 miles on it today, love it! Just ordered a V1 gen2, but that’s not the reason for my post.

Really would like to add a backup camera and CarPlay. I have this Alpine ILX-F309 in my garage I was planning to put in my FJ62 Land Cruiser after it came back from getting a new paint job next month, but it may be better suited for the 911 if it will work.

I went to Crutchfield and it’s telling me it’s “unsure on fitment”

anyone have any idea or recommendations on nice CarPlay replacement units?

thank you in advance!
eric

There are several addon/piggyback units that add the functionality you're looking for.

Not sure if the PCM3.1 has the same hacking viability as the PCM4, but if so, there's that route as well.

The dash is molded around the headunit setup and, while it's a single-din-floating-screen ordeal OEM, the Alpine you have will likely look.... weird. Gaps, floating bits, etc., not to mention the removal of the PCM, which is central to a few of the car's functions. Something I'd look at as a last resort, personally.

Just add the Joyauto CarPlay kit, with a rear camera. It's easy and works.

My understanding is that the 2012's don't have an input for a video camera retrofit.. please correct me if I am wrong..

Exactly, that is why you add the CarPlay module.

But I have Android and don't care about the phone-PCM integration, would love to add a backup camera however

I have a 2012 as well and its PCM 3.1 with Version 3.43 (end of the line). You can install android auto and a camera with this system. https://www.nmautomotive.co.uk/carplay-androidauto. Option 2 is this kit from https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/PK9X1BOSE.html. I did something similar for my 997.1 Bose through crutchfield.
