Default Neat Promotional Material from the 991 Launch

I thought you guys might get a kick out of something I dug up from storage.

When the Porsche 991.1 first launched, Porsche sent me a promotional package and an invitation to come test drive. Normally, these things are just thick glossy brochures. However, for the 991, they did something special. They sent a hardcover book and a display which had clear acrylic “cards” of all the generations of 911 since 1963. If you play with the stacking of them, you can see how much the 911 silhouette has changed (or not changed) over the decades.

The red streak in the photo is where they printed my name on the stand. Each was customized to the recipient (probably explains why I’ve never seen one for sale on eBay!). Sadly for Porsche, the promotion didn’t work as intended though: I didn’t purchase a car until years later. But I kept it and displayed it for a while on my desk because I thought it was one of the cooler promotional efforts I had come across.

What was interesting to me was how much bigger the 991 is now compared to the other generations. Certainly, the size of the 991 was no surprise, it was well covered in the media. But seeing it overlayed against the original 911 was revealing. I included a few photos of the 991 compared to the original 911, and the 996 vehicles. The comparison to the 997 was more subtle so I didn’t include it.

Nice. I played with the clear cards in the sales managers office for a while. Very cool.

What is even more eye popping is seeing the old compared to the new from straight on, like in Panorama.

I bought one from a Porsche dealer with no name, also different box - so keep checking eBay...

Here's another shot of all the plates lined up. Unfortunately, it's hard to get a decent comparison because the plate furthest away is smaller. I noticed that beyond the size difference, the front windscreen has a much more pronounced rake than ever before.

I stil have it somewhere. Yeah, the 911 has become a bit bigger then the older cars! In my 993, I could open and close the passenger door while sitting in the drivers seat.

I also found a 3D ViewMaster type of promo item from Porsche for the launch of the redesigned Cayenne which is pretty funky. I wonder if I can trade that for a Honda Civic or something...

Your version makes me think that if I peel my name tag off the front, it probably says "911" underneath!

How does one get on a Porsche list to receive this kind of promotional stuff? Buy a new Porsche 911 I am guessing...
