Question Just joined: 991.1 or 991.2

Hi Guys, just joined the forum and look forward to contributing. I am currently looking at buying an 911 (991.1 or 991.2) and hope to find the right one and get it ready for summer of 2021. I have been around Porsche my entire life as my father was a master mechanic for Porsche at Porsche in Stuttgart, Germany and helped launch Ruf Porsche as operations manager for Ruf Porsche in Bahrain. He is good friends with Alois Ruf and with Stefan Roser, the guy that drove the Yellowbird around the Nurburgring for those of you who have seen the Ruf promo video on youtube. Now my younger brother has slipped in and works for Ruf Porsche in Germany running the motor department for all air-cooled engines. I myself although not in the auto industry because my father said there is too much politic (LOL - like every industry) but I have my side hobby racingnostalgia.com (I wont share that again as I have read the rules and no advertising - I hope I am not penalized for this) that falls into the realm of Porsche which I enjoy doing on the side. So question to the group what would you buy with less that 50, 000 miles on the clock: 991.1 or 991.2? I know the difference between the 2 but I want some open thoughts! (And yes, I already got an opinion on the cars from my family but they are not in the USA)

IMHO unless there is something extremely specific you must have in a Porsche (for example air cooled 993) I would simply get the newest Porsche you can afford...

I am sure very few people can dispute that with every generation the car gets more advanced and better performance.

i love the way modern turbos drive.

with some exceptions and some option differences. Agree with Garfunkle that .1 is more visceral. Having had upper end versions of each.

I'm getting some hard Deja Vu
Is Turbo vs NA the most common topic in this board?
Good recent perspectives here: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1011...-to-turbo.html

Beyond the NA vs FI discussion (argument???), there are a lot of things they improved in the .2 cars, mostly in the interior but some other engine bits and certainly the PCM. If those things are important to you, then that should weigh into your decision as well. With a family like you have, you probably can't go wrong. And if looking for under 50k miles cars, you should have a ton to go for. I am jaded for the .2 . I just think the small changes (front and rear lights, the vertical vs horizontal engine slats, and the interior appointments, losing the headlamp washers in many of the '19 cars) all make it a better looking package. Better driving car? Depends on what you are looking for.

Good luck and Welcome!

Isn't this thread still on the front page? https://rennlist.com/forums/991/1011...-to-turbo.html
Are we likely to learn anything new at this point?
Why am I even commenting on this
they are both worth looking at for many different reasons. I still like the T even though it won’t outperform any 3.8 991.

Won't take that bait :-) But yes, they're both very much worth looking at and have their own strengths and weaknesses which have been, shall we say, vigorously debated at least once a month here.
It's definitely a good question to initiate a lively thread.

Racing__Nostalgia - there are numerous very lengthy threads in the 991 forum on this exact topic. You could spend hours reading opinions on the 991.1 vs 991.2 debate. I'm an NA guy, so I have a 991.1 GTS cab but I also have a 991.2 (Touring). The 991.2 Carrera was a huge paradigm shift with the turbocharged engine. Some love it, some are old-school, die hard NA guys like myself. Most would tell you to drive both and go after whichever one makes you smile the most.

I suggest anything GTS in either .1 or .2 trim.

You make a valid point, so basically buy both. LOL

I will check out the other threads.

I was in this very boat a few months back.

I started looking at 991's seriously in the Feb - March timeframe. I never drove a 991 so I saw a local dealership with a CPO (manual) 991.1S that was way out of my price range, but would give me the opportunity actually drive a car.

For me, the 991.1 was very nice. It felt like you really needed to work the car hard to get the most out of it. This can be good and it can be bad since you have to be moving at a really good clip to wring it out. Driving normally, which let's face it, we're doing the vast majority of the time, if felt a bit sluggish and needed to worked a bit more to get it to move. The interior was nice, however, I did miss the latest tech.

I decided strictly based on reviews to go for a 991.2. Everything I saw/read said that it was a definite upgrade over the 991.1. The engine is still the basis of the 992 and there is a host of updates to the tech, suspension and some changes to the exterior that I liked as well.
Now that I have the 991.2, I'm extremely happy I made the choice. Yes, the engine is turbo charged, however, it doesn't feel it at all. You still have to rev it quite a bit to really get it moving, but driving around town, there is a noticeable increase in the torque that makes moving around normally a bit easier and less thinking. On back roads, you don't have to have the engine at full boil to really get the most out of the chassis.
The tech is great with Apple CarPlay integrated from the factor (yes, I know you can retro fit this into a 991.1) and PASM standard on 991.2.
No, it doesn't have the exhaust note of the NA engine, but you do have other noises that I thoroughly enjoy - turbo spool, turbo whistle and intake sounds. I have Soul headers and sport cats on order, so the sound should wake it up a bit as well.
Another aspect that I really thought about was tuning and modifying. I NEVER leave a car stock. As I said earlier, the exhaust is on order, plus Bilstein B16 coil-overs, DSC module, Numeric shifter/cables. Once my CPO warranty runs out, I'll be doing an APR tune (My daily is an VW GTI APR Stage 3 - hence my comparison to the 991.2 not feeling turbo charged). This will put my car up to around 500hp.

You're going to hear a ton of back and forth between the two. Basically, you can't go wrong with either. They each offer some differences and those differences will be what makes one better for you vs. the other.

One of the biggest and best upgrades in the .2 is all wheel steering. I value it more than power because I can go the speed I choose to in any of them. My .24S had all wheel steering and it’s something that really helps the car transition and rotate, making it a must option for me in a .2.

For me, I went from a .24S to a GT4 to a 50th Anniversary 911, which is the quickest and most powerful of the 3. The only 2 cars I considered to replace the GT4 was a Carrera T or the 50th. I made the right choice, especially because PDK was a must. My 50th is spec’d the way I would have spec’d a new T (less AWS) in that it doesn’t have a sunroof and I would not have spec’d CF buckets as I’m over those from my GT4. The 50th is also a 100 pounds lighter than the T with 60 more ponies. They sell for about the same these days although 50ths are harder to find as there are only 1963 of them worldwide.

Agree with this 100%.
And if You want the NA sound, but the turbo torque, there’s always the option of adding a supercharger to a 991.1!
