Default 250F Water Temperature in Traffic

Hello! I just purchased my first new to me Porsche, a 991.1 base cabriolet! While I was stuck in traffic for 30 minutes, my water temperature and oil pegged at 250F. The moment I started rolling it dropped back down to normal and ever since I have not had a problem even when idling. Has this happened to anyone before? I have a CPO warranty and scheduled the diagnostics/repair for July 1st. I don't assume any lasting damage occurred as the vehicle did not warn me to pull over and on the electronic screen it was not "in the red".

Overheating in Traffic?

You'll be fine. There was a thread I read recently about this that you can probably find.

Thank you Bob Z; learning a lot. Found some interesting rattle threads too. The power of the search bar!

We have covered most things over the years but every so often something new pops up so don't hesitate to post. When I got my 991 I read pages and pages of threads, not all at one sitting, and I learned a lot.

The normal maximum coolant temp should be 221F (normal operating temp). Above that point, I believe the radiator fans should kick in and bring the temp back down. While it is not uncommon to exceed 221F during spirited driving, in your case 250F sounds extremely high. Might be wise to have it inspected.

I agree, it’s not normal to witness 250F if fan is working properly.

Yeah, but it dropped back down and has not happened since, which makes me believe that nothing is wrong. I would mention in on the 1st though and see what they tell you - be sure to follow up and let us know what they tell you.

Biggest problem with the temp being pegged at 250 is that you don't really know if it's 250, 260, 270......

I will update; I'm wondering if it is indeed a cooling fan as the night before a fan was making a weird intermittent crunching noise, but it went away. So far today I just got back from a spirited drive and everything was within the norm.

In regards to the temperature reading, I assume the electronic gauge would be able to show a higher temperature?

It could have been a sensor/display problem as well since they were both the same.

If the 991 uses OAT coolant, then the boiling point is probably not much higher than 265 F or so (I think I read somewhere Audi OEM is 277F). At 250 (if reading is true) you're getting pretty close.

Certainly get the fan checked out. High temps can lead to think like cracked cylinder heads, scored bores, leaks.

250 seems high, and not normal, in 79 degree weather. You need to get it checked out.
