I have owned many generations of Corvettes and Porsche.

My opinion is that Porsche is so much better with respect to build quality, fit and finish, and being a somewhat practical sports car.

It really boils down to what makes you happy, that's all that really matters.

But none compare to the overall refinement of Porsche. The folks on Rennlist are mostly car people who interested in learning about cars of all kind.

Every post over there turns political, too. Moderation has been worse over the years, folks no where near as civil to each other as they used to be.

And somehow it is also lost on folks that it is indeed possible to like more than one sports car! I like blondes, brunettes, and redheads!

That's a gorgeous example, OP. Congrats, and I doubt you'll regret your purchase as the years and miles pile on.

Corvettes have almost always been "almost" cars for me. While I was very impressed by a C6 ZR1 back to back with a 997 GT2 around Sears Point, and have a side thing for C6 GS ragtops, the Corvette is one of those American cars I dearly want to love but know better. It's impossible to argue with the performance-for-money equation, and even a Porsche engineer mentioned Weissach's respect for that as well as Corvette's management of weight creep. I'll agree, and add that a longtime Porsche friend loved his C6 Z06 for its contrarian practicality and fuel economy in addition to its hooligan good looks and that powertrain. He was less enthused about the recall for roof sections that could fly off at speed.

If you care about concept and execution, there's very little (nothing?) from the General that can be matched up to a Porsche. Bizarrely, one of GM's better executions back then was the SSR (its attention to detail shamed the Corvette), but I couldn't escape the Richard Simmons vibes while driving the thing. It was like a New Beetle, but somehow even worse. A few years later, I did Bondurant's Advanced Road Racing course in C6 Z06s, and remember them being capable but also feeling more or less like 300,000-mile Crown Vics as they squeaked and creaked around the circuit. Demon heat was coming off the center tunnel, and the one a friend was driving spat coolant everywhere when we came in from a hard session. My oil temp read 303 degrees F that session; his registered a bit higher (306?). The coolant in his had obviously exceeded its limit. "Those oil temps are fine with Mobil 1," said the tech while getting him another identical yellow Z06 from a yellow sea of them parked out back. They were so quick about it that I figured it had to be a common occurrence; I made a mental note to avoid used yellow Z06s.

GM lost me entirely with the C7 (styling doesn't do it for me, where some C6s did), and I find the C8 to be a bummer for two reasons 1) it eliminates what makes a Corvette a Corvette to me (front-mounted V8…and I blame BoP for this much the way I do for the mid-engined RSR), 2) no more manual gearbox, 3) the first one to roll by my house confirmed it looks like a giant new Fiero in real life and built roughly as well, 4) that interior , and 5) I highly doubt it will age well. Okay, that's five reasons. Maybe future performance versions or the C8 race cars will change my mind. We'll see...and I truly hope they do.

Weird...I have not heard of a Fiero on years but a few days ago I heard the Fiero Museum was flooded and I just got an email about a 47 mile one at Hank's, which is just south of me: https://hanksters.com/vdp/16208585/U...Beach-FL-32119

Amen to that! Lots of good people, but oh my gosh, it was one of the nastiest forums I've ever been on!

My wife and I test drove a Z06 prior to buying our 991.1GTS. The NVH in the Carrera is worlds apart compared to the 'Vette.

You made the right decision not buying the C8. It's a new platform for GM and their first DCT so I wouldn't trust the first generation. And yeah, I get it about the folks over there on the Corvette forum. It's an older crowd set in their ways and things get political in a hurry.

The gentleman should have traded in his wife, not his 911

I also got tired of waiting for my C8... Have had a deposit on a 2LT Z51 since last august, first delayed by the strike, then the COVID shutdown, plus dealer shenanigans...

I already had a 996 Turbo which I am keeping, but opportunity knocked on a gorgeous 991 Turbo S with full CPO and I pounced... Bye bye Corvette, hello Turbo 2.

This was my ill-fated C8 built... See ya!

The C8 situation truly turned into a nightmare. Union strike, still having to fulfill C7 orders and switch production over, then the COVID shut down. I think the word is they only built 2,000 units or so.

Though I believe you made the right choice, as you hadn't received your car, and most likely wouldn't have gotten a MY20. Those that cancelled at the beginning made a huge mistake. As that car is already being flipped on the secondary market for $30k+

GM will never compete with Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini! The fit, finish and quality is unmatched on these cars. You made a great choice going with Porsche. The C8 is a big step up for GM but it’s a long time coming. It’s still light years behind its competition. The C8 seems unfinished in its design and finish. The quality in Porsche is untouchable.
