991.2 Water Pump Failures
#181
For all...be aware of this so i won't happen to you
I had my waterpump replaced( 991.2S) a few month ago by a OPC (because it just blew up during my summerholdiday driving in France )
Now yesterday i was driving on the Autobahn for a few days away.
I got a message during driving ..check engine cooling fault in system. I thought oh no here we go again?!?. I had to drive only 50 km and it was no orange or red waring so decided to drive to destination checking the engine temp all the time.
While i drive into town and had to stop for a red light suddenly i had no brakes anymore!!
The brake booster did not work anymore .. my luck was i was very nearby a porsche center so i drove there. They checked it and discovered that the vacuumhose was loose from the vacuumpump. Later they discovered it was mounted in a wrong angle 90 degrees to the inletpipe ( thank you Porsche Rotterdam ). Because of the tension of this few months the rubber was torn open and the pipe coming loose resulting in the brakebooster not working anymore.
So you see such a little thing could have ended up in a massive accident.
So i know now also the same can happen as there is or hasbeen coolant in the vacuum system.Eventually the vucuumpump stops working and then it's goodbye brakes
Shouldn't be possible i think?

Way back when as I was talking to the dealer's service tech the day I picked up our 911 after the "repair", he mentioned that the main seal parts were on their third part number update. Just saying....
MBR993, two failures? Beyond belief and not acceptable.

Mine was swapped for a D part and has also been fine, but equally lots of people on initial revision have also been fine so a pump not failing just seems like luck regardless of revision tbh! 5 attempts (so far) at a water pump doesn’t instil a lot of confidence does it…

From one of my earlier posts:
Have been off this thread for quite some time, but recently posted on another issue so your responses popped up on my email. Our water pump work took place in 2019 when our (early build, 2017 Carrera, bought new) 911 had just under 20,000 miles. So far, all's well. Car now has 29,000 miles. I've also heard (as per barncobob) that Porsche is extending coverage for the problem for 10 years.
IMPORTANT UPDATE: Today a letter (dated December 7, 2022) came from Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Subject 2017-2018 Carrera/Targa - Warranty Extension for Coolant Pump and Valve Block
The letter mentions some part numbers, but the key message of the letter is that the problem components warranty, "...will be extended to a total of 10 years from new vehicle delivery or up to120,000 miles, whichever comes first."
Look for your letter in the mail. Should be sooner rather than later.
