Default Advice on buying used 991.1

Hi everyone!

I am a long-time Porsche enthusiast and am considering buying my first used Porsche. Wish I could afford new...one day!

The car I am looking at is a 2012 Carrera S with 30k miles for $62,000 through a private sale. Clean title and CARFAX. Car also looks to be in great condition and fully loaded (Premium Plus, Sport Chrono, leather etc). However, looking at KBB, the price is about $6000 higher than the average private sale price.

I know it’s not CPO so I’m going to get a PPI and self-insure. That being said, wanted to check to see if you had:
  1. Any advice on or threads to point me to regarding questions to ask the current owner
  2. What you think about the asking price
  3. Any reputable indie PPI Porsche folks in West LA region

Am new to this forum so any help would be much appreciated and apologize if some of this is better answered elsewhere. Thank you very much for your help!!

Hard to say whether the price is a good deal or not without knowing the original MSRP. Check out the Hot for Sale thread here for some recent prices: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/8636...91-a-1170.html

I will say that finding a 991 C2S under $60k without high miles or some dings on the Carfax is probably tough. I wouldn't put a ton of stock in the KBB price.

These cars can be priced all over the place depending on options.

If the VIN is in the ad you can run the VIN and see what all the options it has and then compare.

If the ad is online...... post the link so we can see to give you some better guidance.

Get the PPI done they always find a surprising amount that needs attention and that will provide you with your negotiating ammo to hopefully get you a little closer to where you want to be price wise. Goodluck !

Thank you guys, the retail from the window sticker was $116k if that helps. Will definitely do on the above and all good things to keep in mind. Any referrals on a reputable Porsche mechanic in LA (I have googled but any direct referrals from people in the know would be fantastic)!

Circle porsche hands down if you want a dealer PPI. Ask for Dominic. They are by far the best porsche dealer I have been too and I have tried most of them in LA.

Price is probably;y a tad high . My neighbor is selling his 2012 C2S cabriolet with about $19K miles, 7 speed manual and asking $62,500 as a comparison. I think his MSRP was $122k

The OP car would trade-in around $58,500, correct? The amount above or below $58,500 would be due to condition, service history, colors, equipment, etc. So $62k might be a strong number for a private seller.

Thanks again everyone the above is very helpful. Are there any Porsche-specific questions to ask when buying used? I generally know the questions to ask for used cars but wasn’t sure of any specific ones for high end / performance cars. I have not bought a used Porsche before. Thanks again and fully plan to take it to a reputable PPI.

PPI should do most of the "talking" for you. Rest of it will be based off what you can see for yourself, as well as records the owner has kept.

Based on the info in the original post, this sounds like a great deal. I can't see where "about $6000 higher than the average private sale price" comes from. I've never seen one that cheap. You have to be careful with 2012s.... they built 997s and 991s in 2012, and many incorrectly identify the cars.

I bought a PDK 2012.5 c2s w/56k on it last October. Had a $126k sticker, new rotors, pads and PS4 tires. Paid $52k and have spent 0 on it since and am at 63k. Car had taken a bird to the hood and was replaced and shot with the front bumper, so it looks new up front. Since it's my DD, I wasn't concerned about miles as much since I think you have diminishing depreciation on cars with some wear already.

For your 30k version with less options, I think they are asking 62 hoping for 60, offer 55 and see what happens.

You are totally right it’s a 997.2. Thank you for pointing that out. And thanks everyone for the very helpful pointers. All really good to know.

Mystic.

I know everyone has their opinions and you asked so I'm going to give one too.

If you are ever going to spend a little "extra" on a car or a few more $ than you think the car is worth, I would buy it from a Porsche dealer with a CPO of some kind.

I know the 997's are becoming pretty lean as far as availability goes but I have seen a few recently around at dealers with CPO.

It's worth the peace of mind to have a $62k used car with 30k or so miles on it and self insure (warranty). That's just my take. You can get lucky and not need to do anything or have a major failure that may or may not be covered with an aftermarket warranty or heaven forbid a motor or trans failure.

Also, if what you said is that's it's a 997.2 late 2012 car I'd post this up in the 997 section.

You'll get a lot more guys that are on top of Middle aged 997's over there.

Good luck and be safe out there.

From the price you posted, that was my suspicion. Price is high for a 997, low for a 991.
