Default Windshield time?

Hi all, I am on my way up North from Los Angeles. On the first leg of highway driving a big rig shot a rock into my windshield. Obviously it chipped, but not cracked or horrible. I was not tailgating and the truck was in the lane next to me. Stuff happens and I am bummed. My question is how bad was or is your current windshield, before you replace it. I have no cracks, just a good number of small chips. Really in direct sun you can see them. Do most of you just deal with it because it happens? Where do you draw the line before pulling the trigger on a new windshield. Thanks in advance!

I replace mine when I get a nice crack in it.

If I replaced after every chip I’d constantly be getting a new windshield!

If just a chip (and more than a tiny chip) then have a repair done. With modern materials and process, the results will be nearly invisible, and also reduce chances of the chip nucleating a crack.

I had a chip repaired recently at no cost, which is the norm here in FL so you may want to look into it in your state. Otherwise, if it getting distracting get it replaced.

Years ago I was driving home my newly ordered 2008 Boxster S from Brumos and had a rock bounce off my hood, twice, and chip my windshield...**** happens.

Why are new cars a magnet for rock chips and door dings? It seems so strange, especially since I am extra cautious with a new car. I've had more damage in the first 1000 miles of many cars than in the next 20000. S**t happens!

Living in Florida and driving on the expressways is a crap shoot with all the effing gravel trucks dumping their *hit without a care.

BTW. Florida has the highest concentration of phosphate deposits in the US, mined for fertilization (and its run-off is wreaking havoc). Plus gravel trucks galore. And you wonder why we get free insurance windshield replacement (well it's free only because you don't pay for an individual replacement, but everybody pays through their premiums).

You can also buy a DIY kit to fix it yourself if you want. I've done it a few times - it's fairly easy. The main reason to do it is to prevent it from growing.

Would Gorilla glass prevent chips or is it overrated. If it was worth it I suppose insurance co's would lobby manufacturers for it.
