Note: I need to update my oil preferences as of 2018/2019 I do not recommend the heavy duty engine oils like Shell Rotella or Mobil Turbo diesel. The base formula in these oil have changed "drastically"
I am running Motul 5W50/5W40 in one of my 996TT, another 996TT has Mobil 0W40/5W50 blend. My go to oil blend recommendation is Redline 0W40/5W50 blend which I run in my 997TT and 991TTS.. Redline is owned by Connoco Phillips. A few things that I have noticed over the years is... My oil consumption has dropped to zero. I have virtually no oil startup smoke shows when the car sits for over two weeks. Valve train start up rattle does not exist. (in fairness if the cars sit over two weeks I pull the fuel pump fuses and self prime the engine). My wear metals are continue to trend down similar to Saabin posts. Redline oil tends to be quieter vs the Motul Sport oil (300V is louder as it sheers)… BTW, Motul oil generally are thinner out of the bottle.. Redline runs thick.
To sum it up. The perfect oil requires you testing the oil and watching the wear metal trend down. Having the wear metal stay the same OR increase is NOT the PERFECT oil. Personally, I like to see my ZDDP wear additives run close to 1100 when my oil is used up. Which brings me to this>> I get emails and PM's requesting my opinion on BRAND "X" oil. My answer is.. Can you find UOA reports on the internet from you a similar car? Can you see the wear trend going down? Is the oil sheering. The Porsche flat 6 turbo engine eats up oil, it is a meat grinder and shears OIL into a 30 weight!... Engine wear increase> the UOA reports go to $hit when we see the cST Viscosity values fall into the 11.XX and low 12's... Keep them in the 13's...minimum. High 14's and low 15's is GREAT... In the end, test your oil and get a baseline established over two or three oil changes and see what you oil wear trend looks like.

Dumb questions. When you guys say do one at 2k and another one every 5k. Does that mean when Odometer hits 5k or 7k you'll do the 2nd one? I assume it's 7k

I've done my first one at 2k on my own. Easy process for a peace of mind.

Great post by Kevin however rather unrealistic/confusing/unnecessary for most here. Taxis change their oil every 5000 mikes or so and they run for hundreds of thousands of miles. $500/change up here. I'll probably double Porsche's recommendation.

Yes If you did one at 2,000 miles, then do again at the 7,000 mile mark. Again at 12K. And so on.

I want the guy that changes his oil every 18 months or so at less than 10000 miles for many years and if he has damaged his engine.

I’ll probably change the oil & filter every 5,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first on my Porsche. I personally think it’s overkill but some of us will never overcome our OCD.
In reference to your comment, a good friend owns a decade plus old Volvo with over 150,000 miles on the odometer. It has the original engine and turbo. He only fills it up with the cheapest gas and changes the oil every 10,000 miles, and it’s still going strong. He’s the original owner. Porsche is far superior to a Volvo. Just sayin’.

I faithfully change my oil at 5k miles or one year whichever comes first. Oh wait, I never put more than 5k miles on my Porsche in a year.

Anybody have a checklist of service to be done for each mileage milestone? I only have 10k (oil change, cabin filter change, air filter change). What's after this?

Don't you have a Maintenance booklet? All the services are outlined in the Maintenance booklet. Moreover, there's a maintenance record in the booklet where the dealer can place his stamp to certify that the maintenance has been performed along with the date when the service was performed.

Along with your manual, which along with the maintenance schedule can be found online as I referenced in my post above.

Didn't mean to hijack, but thought I could get a quick answer from the group.
For those of you that change your own oil, how did you reset the service light? Go to dealer? or buy a tool - which tool?
I'm ready to invest in the tool, just making sure I'm on the right track...Thanks!

Yes, "facetious" is appropriate rather than "pedantic".
