Things I like about the metal sunroof on my 991:
- The way it works there is not less headroom, and I can't see how strange it looks when I'm driving.
- Popping the rear is the way to alleviate the throbbing wind noise and elevate the exhaust note at speed with the windows down.
- It has exactly the same shape as a non sunroof car (the cutlines do not change that).
- I can open it or leave it closed. Sort of like air conditioning and PSE, use is a useful option.
- I don't worry about hailstorms; well not more than usual.
i had my sunroof opened on my way home from work last night. finally cool enough to drive without a/c and the air through the sunroof is just perfect. open window driving makes too much air turbulence at high speeds.
I don't like the look of glass on the roof so I got the the metal roof. looks cleaner in my opinion. i love that porsche even has this option.
i say totally worth it unless you live somewhere constantly hot year round and need the A/C on all the time
Hey - I am coming your way in a few weeks and looking forward to some good food! I used to live there, one place was bordering Seolleung park and the other was near Dogok station. I worked on Teheran-ro near the COEX. I was great times.
I have had 3 991s - metal sunroof, glass sunroof, and metal sunroof.
I used to be a "no sunroof" kind of guy. I never open them on my other cars/SUVs. I probably would have been fine with my first 911 without one but it came with it and I used it. I used it a LOT on nice days, driving back country roads.
My second 991 had the glass sunroof. It was a black car so it blended in perfectly - you couldn't tell it was glass unless you were inside the car. The sunscreen was nice but on really bright days, it still let an awful lot of sunlight into the car when you didn't necessary want it. I think that a more opaque sunscreen would have mitigated this. The weight of the glass versus steel has been posted on here before - it's negligible over the steel, not nearly as large a difference as you might think.
So when I ordered a new 991 for my third one, I spec'ed a metal sunroof. I didn't want the contrasting black of the glass sunroof (on a non-black car) and since I love the color I picked, I wanted to see more of it. Also, the amount of sunlight that the glass roof let in at high noon, even with the sunshade closed, was a bit too much for me, especially in the summer.
In all three 991s I have owned, the sunroof never squeaked or rattled. I use mine all the time and love it! I don't really want the open airiness of a cab or the complexity of the Targa (although they still look awesome!) so the sunroof was a fine option for me. YMMV.
Man, what a geek...the driver seems like he was paid to give him a ride to listen to his complaints. He must be one of those people that walk around with an umbrella on sunny days.
116 poll respondents with 57 (49%) voting no hole. I seem to recall a poll on the topic of if the currently-owned 991 had a hole but can’t find it now. It would be interesting to see if the numbers are close.
One thing is certain: way WAY less than 49% of 991s are ‘hole-challenged.’

Yep, Gangnam style, lol. I lived there for three years so I have lots of places to visit. I trained for the Chuncheon marathon along the Han so maybe take a run there for nostalgia. I have to take a KTX run down to Busan to deliver a speech.
Why would you purchase perhaps one of the finest engineered sports cars ever produced and then request the manufacturer cut a hole in the top of it to relieve all that structural rigidity that you just paid for ? Seems absolutely loony to me but thank goodness we do not all like the same thing or there would be none of it left.
i actually like the glass roof, but i couldnt find one with the options and condition that i want at the time....so I went with the regular sun roof, and I use it quite often here in SoCal
Have the glass sunroof, would not get a 911 w/o. No rattles, no wind noise. Pull the shade back frequently, tilt it open on a hot day (car stays cooler when parked), open it all the way sometimes. In the right environment, say driving thru the mountains, all windows down and sunroof open is quite cool, figuratively and literally!
If you like squeaks and creaking from torsional flexing by all means go with a sunroof.
My guess is that most here have not experienced any issues incliding myself. I dont baby my car when driving. It seems that the engineers designed for it and Porsche didnt just cut a hole in the roof. In fact, I have never had a sunroof issue in any car I have owned.
