Default Numb Steering?

I recently sold my 993 Targa and bought a 991.1 that looks much the same, but is much larger. It barely fits in my garage. While it proved to be a fantastic grand touring car on the 3600 miles we recently drove to/at/from Parade, I find the steering feel sadly lacking compared to other cars I have driven. It just feels numb. Spoke to another 991 owner recently and he feels the same.

Our other car is a Mercedes E350 which has a better feel. And, I have driven cars from non-power steering race cars to '70's era Chrysler products (If you ever drove any, you know what I mean.) to a Ferrari F40 and many others. I just don't like the way the 991 steering feels.

How about the rest of you?

My 991.2 GTS and my 991.1 GT3 both felt great. They both felt much better than my 997.1TT did, and better than my Huracan which just felt numb. Maybe it depends on the model? I tried a 991.2S, and I didn't like the way that drove at all, including the steering. Either way if it feels worse than an E350 and a '70s Chrysler I'm inclined to think something is wrong with your car, because I can't imagine it could be worse than those?

Went from a 997.1 to the 991.1. Many said “you’ll miss the hydraulic steering “.

Nope.

Not sure? Post your VIN

Went from 997.2 Targa to a 991.2 Cab S. Steering feels more responsive and quicker. Big upgrade IMHO.

Drive around in a Camry for a few days then hop back into the 911.

It'll feel perfect by then.

If someone doesn't like power steering plus (PSP), the dealer can disable. It's only software.

Some do like it (Hurricane)

Steering feel means different things to different people, but I would have to agree, at least in my 991.2, the biggest disappointment was the lightness of the steering, especially just off center. I've always believed a sports car should have heavier steering than your average family sedan/minivan, and that 's definitely not the case with the 991.2 (I don't have PSP, luckily). Overall great responsiveness and very direct, but I like working a little when I move the wheel. Switching to Sport/Sport+ helps a bit. My 1993 Camry and the car I learned to drive in, a hulking 1976 Ford LTD station wagon, all had a much more satisfying "heft" to the steering when I turned the wheel. I'm pretty sure my preferences are in the minority though, as car makers are definitely making their steering lighter and lighter.

I don't think there's much question that the 991 steering has less texture and feel than the purely hydraulic PS systems on the 964 and newer cars, or the manual steering of the pre-964 cars. I regularly drive my longhood, 993, and 991 back to back, and the 991 has awful steering feel. One of the real shortcomings of the car.

Someone was looking to see if there was a way to reprogram a non-GT 991 steering to GT3 programming because apparently the part numbers for the racks are the same so like PSP it may just be a difference in software?

Agreed. A back to back drive in my M3 and the GTS reveals how terrible the electric steering really is in terms of feedback.

The two dealers nearby me refuse to do.

Does anyone know of any dealers in California (North or South) that will do the job?

PM me if you prefer to answer in private. Thanks in advance.

How much power assist is there at 40 mph and higher? Is more like s manual gear at higher speeds? If you need a calibration try driving g a base Macan ( overboosted).
