Will I be happy with a base or should I get a gts?
I also own a 2017 r8, 2011 twin turbo r8, and other high performance cars.
I test drove a base 991.2 carrera (manual) and I thought it was phenomenal. I'm wondering though if I should just spend the extra dough and get a gts?
I figure I can buy a base and tune it (or get bigger turbos down the road if need be) if I need more power.
I love the widebody look of the gts and carrera 4 but can get a 991.2 base used for low 80's, carrera 4 used for low 90's, and a used gts for 110 to 115k..
992 is right around the corner, should I wait?
First world problems.

Drive both and see if either or hits your pulses.
I chose GTS for a myriad of reasons; RWD and widebody(can't get RWD widebody on other Carreras), center locks, performance features (larger turbos/power), resale, looks, better brakes and exclusivity(sort of).
I honestly would have been happy with any 911 in the range though. Originally wanted an S. Base has no LSD I believe.
You've got a TT R8 and a 17 R8. Seems like you have power/performance in your DNA. Looks like 600whp or close is possible on the GTS turbos. That's good enough for me.

Definitely drive the gts
i would say there are not many who would rather a base over a gts if money wasn’t a factor
i think the interior; the widebody, the engine and all the suspension options you can’t get on the base would be a big sell for me on the gts.
Hell my 991s is a poor mans gts so I could get most of those options, and I love it. I drove a base and liked it but wouldn’t have been happy.
the optional performance extras make a big difference imo.

Get the GTS if you have the money. There's nothing about the GTS that's worse than the base, but there's plenty that's better. It's a no brainer if you can afford it.
I have a 991.2 GTS, and it's easily the most fun car I've ever owned, including a Lamborghini Huracan and a 991.1 GT3. It's even better with a tune!

I rented a 4 GTS and drove the autobahn last month. That car is a total weapon, truly a fast car. The GTS is a solid $30-40k more than the base, that is not a trivial sum for a few of us. I'm happy with the base and with the 30k in the bank.

There is a 991.2 Porsche in between those two models.
For street use, i like my 991.2 C2S better than either of those two models, at its cost and the performance it provides.
And, if in the future i get bored with the power, there is always add the Porsche X51 Power Kit that converts the power train to GTS specs. That upgrade won't be possible with the base 991.2

if you get the base, might as well wait for the 992. However, the GTS variant won't be out for another 2 years at least, so if that's what you want should get the 991 now
Also if you're already into the GTS only features like wide body etc... Just do it. You're spending 100k+ on a car, don't want to regret it afterwards for not getting exactly what you wanted.

If you like the base manual, you’ll love the GTS in manual. I just got a 991.2 GTS in manual, and it’s definitely the fastest MT car I’ve ever driven. Once you rev past 3K rpm, the power is phenomenal! It’s almost too fast, which makes it a little unnerving too but also more fun. For comparison, I have an F10 M5, which is no slouch when it comes to power.
And the 992 GTS most likely won’t be around for 2-3 yrs, and life is too short to wait...

It depends on what you're chasing. If you want the latest Panamera-style tech, wait for the 992. I was in the gray area between choosing the 991.2 on known aesthetics and the 992 on unknown. To me, the 991.2 GTS is visual poetry. Just LOOK at it. I had trouble considering another car without using the 991.2 GTS as the basis for comparison. And, honestly, from what I've seen, I just don't like the 992. Maybe I'll eat crow when the camo comes off, but for now, the 991.2 GTS is the sexiest 911 that I've seen in a very long time. And it's the only one that's actually made me fork over a check.

Three little words: G T S.
You should drive both, of course. I was disappointed with the base 991.2, both from a road feel perspective and acceleration. It was noticeably slower than my (admittedly very tuned) 435i. Then I drove a GTS and within about two minutes, there was no turning back.

I doubt you'll ever get into the GTS and think 'gosh, would I be happier in a base model'

If it helps I own a manual T which is basically a base model. If money was no object I would get a gts. However, having driven both, for daily driving I found the manual suits the base engine much better because you come off boost between shifts and it accentuates the lag with the bigger turbos. If I bought the gts (personally) I would go pdk because it makes it so much faster and I would want to extract all the power out of the bigger turbos. For street driving the pdk really suits the gts engine beautifully. Once you have momentum the manual and pdk are closer in performance. If all you want is the chassis, and 7mt it might be worth considering an S or a T.

@ flsupraguy: I was torturing my mind with the same question a couple of months ago and (after extensive test driving) I was sure to get the GTS over the base Carrera until the emergence of the T (addresses the to me important shortcomings of the base car in terms of cornering dynamics: LSD, SPASM, wider tires and RAS as an option). If they wouldn't have introduced the T I definitely would have gone GTS - the S is also very nice of course but once you tick all the performance boxes (if important to you) the price tag ends up at GTS level anyway. GTS of course has the edge over a base/T in terms of straightline performance. Other than that it's just a matter of personal taste regarding design (wide hips vs. slim rear, interior options). These cars are all great and while Porsche is filling almost every nieche with their 911 line up (I think the current "headcount" is 23 or so :-) ) my favourite Carrera is yet to be introduced to the line up: a GTS with the slim body :-) I like the slim body for the Carrera (not GT-cars) a lot, do not like the black plastic stripe at the rear of the 2WD GTS (though no deal killer for sure) and more important love to have fun on (sometimes rather narrow) alpine roads where I find even the slim body carrera's width a bit challenging (I am always wondering how it would be to attack these roads with a Ferrari...) - though the latter aspect may be completely irrelevant in your neck of the woods.
I wouldn't wait for the 992 (the car will be even bigger) unless you are keen on the probably radically revamped interior.
