Default 991.1 Oil Loss?

Hey guys,
I bought my 2013 C4S last week and absolutely love it. The car has 40k miles and I bought it in the Bay Area and drove it roughly 500 miles home to San Diego. The independent (non-Porsche) dealer I bought it from changed the oil before I bought it. The day after getting home, I was driving back from work (30 mile daily commute) and the minimum oil level reached warning (yellow) came on (flat freeway section). I bought Mobil 1 0W-40 and added a little less than a quart. Since then I’ve driven no more than 50 miles but the oil level seems to have gone down again, it hasn’t reached minimum but has oscillated between one green square to three green squares on the dash meter. There doesn’t seem to be any blue smoke on startup and there’s no evidence of an oil leak anywhere on the bottom of the engine or on my garage floor. Does this all seem normal? Part of me feels like a concerned new parent and part of me believes everything is just fine. I just wish an analog dipstick was present on this car... Any advice you all can provide is greatly appreciated. Happy to provide any additional details if needed. Thank you.

IMO, if there is no oily film around your exhaust tips/rear bumper cover from burning oil, and the engine bottom is dry with no oil drips, then it is just that the technician added the minimum amount of oil before the light tripped, and he was either not aware of the proper oil checking procedure or too lazy to confirm the post-change level. I've heard that it can take a little while before the "real" oil level is registered through the monitor. I.e., warnings for low or high oil level can occur a day or two after the oil was changed. The range from bottom to top on the dipstick gauge is 1.8L, if I recall correctly.

BTW, congrats on your new 911!

Just add oil bit by bit over the course of a few days (driving in between top ups to give the gauge a chance to register the change) to get it up towards full.

Make sure you are measuring properly:

Park on level ground
Oil hot hot (over 210)
Engine off 60 seconds
Turn key to position one (engine not running)
Read level

Add oil at 200 mls per drive cycle till you nail the level you want. Don't add more than 400 mls per cycle. You don't want overfilled.

Thanks Whiteducktail! Good to know. No oily film anywhere near the back. I’ll keep an eye on it.

Thanks LexVan, I did the same procedure yesterday, but turned the car back on after the minute of it being off. The oil temp was 201 at that point. I’ll give it another go the proper way after getting to work tomorrow (15 miles on freeway).

This is why I won't let anyone change my oil except me or my race shop. In my car, the gauge is a worthless POS. The only way to change the oil is with a precision fill. That means measuring what you drain and put back in exactly the same amount.

Default Oil loss

I have a 2008 911 4S with 40000miles and I am loosing about 1litre every 700 miles. The car runs great, what is the likely problem?

That's within Porsche spec. You should post this in the 997 Forum. There was a recent thread on this. I'll try to find it for you. Welcome to Rennlist.
