Does it have to do with the turbo engines ?
Who knows, but I doubt it. 718s' sales in the US were down last year when compared to 981 sales in 2016. Not too often that the sales of a new model launch are less than the sales of the model it replaced. The speculation is that then 718 sales are down because of their turbo 4cyl engines and increased prices. It looks like the sales of all sports cars in the US were down in 2017. Maybe people want practical cars. In my area everyone has a SUV.

All conjecture really - the economy optics are that it's teh best it has ever been so it's not that. "regular" cars have more and more power and capability than ever before so the need to get what a special car gave you interms of performance 10 years ago can be had in most sedans. Also - one could argue that people wanting practicality would help 911's in the sports car world since it is so utilitarian. I'd also introduce the hypothesis that cars on demand like Uber have a had a material impact on overall car sales in metropolitan areas.

If I wanted to heckle I'd post a video of a new 911 sounding suspiciously like a vacuum and cite that as a leading indicator....

There were a few available in Canada....I was offered one and passed on it. I can say I got one of the very, very few C4 GTS allocations for all of first half of the year for Canada. Apparently lots of other dealerships have waiting lists but from the best of my knowledge no allocations for factory orders.

March lock, June delivery. I am pleased. My dealer had to trade away a few cars to secure it for me.

Don't give up! Targa GTSs are the best and well worth the wait.

One thing people forget is that the 2016 981 numbers were inflated by the sales of Spyders and GT-4s. This, combined with the bad press associated with the 4 vs 6 cylinders makes for an unfavorable year to year comparison.

Anecdotal at best, but my dealer does not have a single new 911 in inventory, and only one incoming. I believe the only cars they have in the pipeline to be built are a Turbo S and a few GT3's. Meanwhile they have a bunch of 718's on the lot gathering dust. When I picked up my GTS last month, I traded in a '15 981 Cayman S, and they sold it twice in less than 2 weeks. The first sale fell through at the last moment, but it was officially sold to someone else 2 days later. I found that kind of odd, because the 981 Cayman prices kind of cratered over the last 4 months. But then again, that may be the reason.

"I can get a guy to drive me from point A to point B in his Corolla, so I no longer want to buy a $70k two seat mid-engine roadster". I don't think that's a thing.

I would guess more than anything that it's related to the falling dollar. Between the higher Euro and the higher 911 prices in Europe, with the economies pretty good there as well, they are probably just maximizing profit. Limited supply, outstripped by global demand, they are selling them where they can make the most money.

Seriously doubt the Uber hypothesis.

I am told GTS are really hard to get, with targas easiest, then coupe, then cabriolet. I am luck I have a manual 2WD GTS cabriolet. Got it last September. I love it!

According to their web site, my local Porsche dealer has 7 718s and 2 991s, a base and an S. Seems like a lot of Caymans and Boxsters.

Seattle. Doesn’t get much more liberal. And yes, Uber is a thing. And yes, people give up cars because of it. But none of those people strike me as the kind that were in the market for a Porsche before.

Yes, I have. I managed to escape a few years ago,, but I still know NY and Brooklyn well, and you're right that a number of people may say "I don't need to own a car anymore", but those weren't Porsche buyers in the first place, they would never have stepped into a P dealer even by accident.
