Turns out it was a rock, stuck in the dust shield... Who would've thunk it...But I did get a chance to line the 991 up against a 992... The 992 is visibly larger....
1 - Great pictures! These comparison shots really show the size difference you pointed out, and also the angular look of the 992 up front and on the sides of the car. I'm clearly biased (aren't we all?), but the rounded shapes are more classic Porsche to me, just like the interior of the 991 is more classic - what I call classic is probably only a few years away from being called antiquated, but I'm going to enjoy my *old fashioned* 991 for a bit longer.
2 - I am relieved the weird noise turned out to be so banal...it never made sense to me that a 2019 would have wheel/brake/hub/suspension noises due to a part failure. Lesson learned for me - avoid small pebbles on the road!

Pb, I definitely agree with you. This is my first Porsche (2019, 991.2) and I've always loved the many versions of the 911. I do like the 992, but not as well as the 991.2 (both inside and out). In my opinion, your comment of being "antiquated" just adds prestige to a Porshe.
BTW, ... glad you found your noise problem and it being a simple and inexpensive fix.

992 negatives to me are increased size, more angular look, loss of analogue gauges/binnacle, and the super weird shifter.

Size! The model has gotten larger and larger with each generation. The 4-wheel steering claw a bit of that back but still. Nimbleness = Driving enjoyment
The 930 Turbo to 991 turbo size difference doesn't look anywhere near that profound in person, and I don't think the 992 Turbo is that much bigger...
Yes, I realize there is some foreground perspective making the 930 look a bit bigger and the others a bit smaller, but it actually looks much closer in person than the above picture would imply...
930 Turbo, 718 GTS, 991 Turbo S, 991 Turbo S:
Adding this one as well since it has a 355 in the mix for comparison...

It has accumulated about 1000lbs of mass from the 930 to the 992tt - that is substantial.
When I rolled into the bay the other day at Porsche, there was a 930 tucked up the inside, I should have taken a pic of them together, it was notably smaller, basically, the same size of the targa I just sold, the targa, just a little narrower.
And I do not think it is just the mass itself, it is how it has been distributed around the chassis - you sit higher, there is more space in the cabin - I suppose that these evolution's of design are to comply more so with impact/crash standards than anything else. I saw the same thing in the new Suburban - it is only a few hundred pounds heavier than my 2002, but when they are side by side, it is pretty plain to see that everything about the new truck is 'bigger'.
