I taught both my kids on a 5 speed Honda, but I let them drive my 5 speed RX-7 Turbo when I was with them. Just remembered, I let my son take the RTX-7 to his Prom.

I also think one of the best things for a 16 year old is to go out on the track with an instructor. This is my son (16 at the time)...for years he has been telling my what I have been doing wrong and how can I let people pass me...he came off after his first time saying that it was humbling and how stressful it was....by the end of the day his instructor (my friend) was real proud of his smoothness. BTW...he is still telling me what I need to do with my driving.

Lucky kids for sure! I wasn't so fortunate, I had a 95 subaru wagon as my first car when I was 17. LOL!
Now I have a pretty nice stable at 28, really appreciate what I have. e90 335i, f82 M4, f10 M5, 991.1 Turbo S
I don't even let my parents drive any of my cars... they're like my children.

e90 335i is upgraded single turbo and makes 750whp.
f10 M5 has a few bolt ons, makes about 700whp limited by DCT not sure if I want to build it.
Two totally different beasts though, M5 is probably the fastest and most comfortable of all my cars.

Great idea. There is a Teen Safety and Survival Driver’s course via Skip Barber we’ve signed our son up for in March. The program teaches teens key skills within the safety of a track environment. Some time on a skid pad will be priceless for him to experience how it feels when the tires break lose. Hopefully it’s as good as I’m expecting.

There is a skidpad, kick plate and threshold braking area at PCNA's Atlanta Experience Center. Also a slalom course and a short racetrack. The instructors are great and can really help with skills development. I do not know what the age limitations are but it is worth it to check it out.

My 15 yr old son learned to drive a stick on my 600 hp C5 Corvette track car with a very stiff dual disk clutch that was like and on/off switch. He'd break a sweat after about 10 minutes. At age 23 he's a very smooth accomplished driver. I almost enjoy him driving me around in the TTS as much as I do driving it.
Some companies rate the young driver on all the cars insured on the policy. I recommend using a company that only rates them on a single vehicle so only that car's premium increases. I have state farm.
