My money is on "Both" 4.0L and 4.2L, following the formula set with the 997 generation (RS 3.8 and 4.0).
It wouldn't surprise me to see an RS with a 4.0L (a little more power squeezed from the GT3's 4.0, between 520 and 525hp) and then a special limited edition RS 4.2 with between 535 and 550hp...
But maybe they are streamlining models (with 997, there was GT2 and GT2RS for example). If only one NA RS, then I vote for 4.2L.

The 4.0 was used in the 997 era in the RSR already so it was not a 'new' engineering exercise for the 4.0RS engine. As things stand, there is not 4.2l engine in any motorsport function or indeed any other car. Manthey I believe do have a 4.2 engine upgrade but that's only for the old Mezger cars so it's not exactly compatible with the current 9A1.
I'm still surprised how many people seem to think the 4.2 is going to happen. Personally (without any special inside knowledge admittedly) I can't see it happening.

There is also nothing in motorsports that runs a motor that resembles the motor in the GT2 RS (except maybe the Cayman GT4 Clubsport without the turbos).

And the gt2 has not had a motorsport link since the 993 GT2. In any case my point was less that it's not present in motorsport but it's not present at all in any car. It would seem unlikely to me at least that the required engineering effort would go into a 4.2 just for the gen 2 gt3 rs.

The rationale for 4.2 is that it's difficult to pump out even more power with the current 4.0.
I like the idea of 4.2 and if it bacomes reality, this 991.2 GT3RS would be the very first 911 GT car with a 4.2 engine. Just like that 997 4.0 RS were the very first 4.0, the 4.2 RS will be a very special car.
