You think the 997 RS 4.0 is a direct comparable to a 911R? And that people would cross shop those cars for the same intended use?

Rennlist is a unique and amazing resource. But this thread really a demonstration of the worst of Rennlist.
Most of the people who comment on R and 997 4.0 do not own and probably haven’t driven either. Definitely not extensively and not on the track. As someone who is fortunate enough to own both and use them extensively I can say that R is a phenomenal car. It’s is engaging, light, fast and it does everything that 4.0, but with ease. Who cares if it is the last manual in 991 or not? It looks like 991 RS will be offered as a stick as well, but I don’t see anyone bashing 997 4.0. And this car by the way is extremely uncomfortable anywhere, but on the track. However with the appreciation of this car it doesn’t make sense to track it so most of them are in the collectors garages. And when they are sold people are asking 2 to 3 times sticker yet no one is whining about it. The R is 100% the GT car you can drive on public road without looking like a douche in GT car with a big wing. Inferior engine? I don’t hear anyone bashing this very same engine in 991 RS which by the ways is heavier, PDK and has a huge wing which looks rather stupid on public roads.
The sour grapes song of those who did not or could not get the car got old. Get over it. Drive what you can and enjoy it.

As to the wing looking "douchey" I disagree. Once you spend over 100k a wing becomes acceptable on a street car

Man, we really blew up the OP's thread.. just not in the way he had hoped. I think the hubris in the title, as much as the funny asking price really struck a nerve with everyone.

The people buying these cars for big money thought they could flip them.
The 997.2 RS 4.0 has the reputation of using the greatest 911 motor in the history of Porsche and being the best version of their analog cars. It's basically the best of its generation and arguably all the generations before it. The pricing on it is supported by Porsche collectors who know exactly what I'm talking about.
The 911R has a reputation of having a second-rate motor that is probably going to grenade its top-end at some point which is why it was completely redesigned with a solid valve train in the 991.2. The pricing on it is supported by speculation and flippers using the 918 VIP program to enrich themselves. The chickens are coming home to roost and I foresee a huge drop in prices beyond what's happened already. It will probably always be a valuable car because it's limited but the true value of this vehicle is probably around 250k in today's dollars when it settles to reality.

I don't need to taste a piece of **** to know that I don't want to. I'm not saying the 911 R is a piece of **** but at 400k, I think it is. Humans are gifted with wisdom and reason and we can figure things out on our own using similar experiences.
The reality is; if you own an R you have the self-serving motive to talk it up and prop up it's grossly inflated value due to your bias.
We all know the 911 R is a 991.2 GT3 with a lesser motor minus the wing. Sure there's other differences but that's 95% of it right there. A car is simply the sum of its parts and the 911 R values only happened because flippers speculated it was the last manual GT car. Now that a better manual GT car has been announced in wide availability -- prices are rightly dropping back to reality. Hell -- even the 911 R owners know it privately; Andreas Preuniger talked about how they were writing him letters not to kill the value of their cars

Sorry. Cars are the sum of their parts.
