The true value of the R

Same discussion could be had regarding watches - a $100 quartz watch can keep better time than a $750k Richard Mille. Some people - regardless of that - want the Richard Mille. Why? Because they have sufficient funds to do so..

These are all great cars. The R is special by virtue of it's limited numbers and what it is.
.2GT3 is a great car and special by virtue of what it is. The latest and greatest GT3 and while produced in more numbers is still "limited" production when compared to most peberformance cars.
That the .2GT3 has a "better" engine based on what Chris Harris said, I am not sure what he was referring to but likely the fact it revs higher and has a slightly improved torque curve I guess.
The R and .1RS have the same engine and are great lumps with just a lower rev limit. A testament to the prowess of the .1RS with an R lump is evidenced by the fact Chris Harris just picked it over the new AMG GTR in a 3 way comparison with the BMW GT4 also. Per Chris Harris the .1RS is still "a daddy" even 2 years after launch. Pretty impressive.

I can't find a single square inch of this horse to try to make my mark on ... all I see is a bloody pulp, barely even resembles a horse anymore poor thing. I say we lay this poor beast next to the other one from the "jethro said a bad word" titled thread and just let them both RIP.

And that's the problem....these cars become investments instead of being what they were build to do...BE DRIVEN! Buying an R as an investment is pure speculation, especially if you are paying 2x MSRP. If and when I buy a 997 4.0, I can promise you that it will be driven.

If I can spec the "wing delete" on my .2 GT3 MT allocation, I'll resist putting stripes on it. But I may customize the door sills with "WARNING: 911R Killer." Of course I'm kidding. The 911R will very likely always trade at a premium, if that's important to anyone.

Getting back to the original question of trying to determine a value for the R, one way is to look at production numbers and prices of its closest peers that have had time for their values to settle.
Compared to the 997 4.0, production of the R was 65% higher, and compared to the R, production of the 997 RS 3.8 was about 60% higher. If you flip that and price the R about 60% above the 3.8 and the 4.0 65% above the R you end up with the current price relationship between comparable quality examples of the 3.8 and 4.0, which tends to confirm the production number/price relationship between comparable cars.
I think it likely that this is where the R will sit by the end of 992 production. R prices dropped with the announcement of the 991.2 GT3 and may drop a little further nearing .2 delivery or with future GT model announcements or may hold steady while 3.8 and 4.0 prices climb.
However if a significantly better R is released as the grand finale of the 992 series one might have to look at the 996 RS as a benchmark for the 991.1 R. The 996 RS was released at a similar point in the model cycle to the R, only 682 were built and it is currently priced only a little above the 997 3.8 RS...

Please don't try to index the 996 RS against anything- none of them were sent stateside for traditional markets (gray market sureand it's a 996. If you do that, you are arguing against yourself
A 996 GT3 is a 80k car, and a good 996 RS is 250k.
So, by your logic a 2016 GT3 at 160k means a 991 R will settle at 480k.
None of these cars are apples to apples. They don't all serve the same function anymore.
A 991.2 TT-S is way faster, more comfortable, more tunable, more easily customized, etc vs the gt3/RS which are simply louder and more light. So, the RS should be worthless because it's slower.
But it makes that noise!!!!
Sorry guys I saw one of the horse hairs blowing in the breeze and thought it was still alive

In other words, if you're denied a GT2RS buy a CPO TTS and go bully all else at the track.
Throw away all cats and mufflers and I'll skip the buckets and go for ventilated 18 ways. Maybe some more left leg presses.

As for apples with apples I said comparable cars, i.e. the cache, production numbers and desirability of the RS and R. I don't remember saying anything about plain GT3s or TTs.
