All of these is a big mystery and I suppose the real deal will be announced early March.

Good point on the strength of the engine, carcommander. However if the base price is true at $3887K, what constitutes that price? Are they making the whole car Carbon Fiber? Or the price is in error?

On the serious side I much doubt the 4.0L will be tuned to 550hp. That means 137.5 Hp/L, thereby making it the highest specific output production engine around I have no doubt it can be produced but much doubt about its reliabilty. IIRC the Speciale has the highest specific output of modern engines and it is well shy of the dreamed about 4.0L.

RS in Australia started @ approx $420K AUD drive away (including all taxes etc) for base car. Bear in mind that options take the car to a normal drive away price closer to $450K AUD.

came from Anonymous918 and a few others who seem to have connections. I also was wondering why no one seemed to be bringing up the absurdity of that supposed power output from a 4.0 NA engine?

It was pretty clear when Porsche released the 991 RS with 500 hp that they were leaving room for another model above it. The redline increase and head design would lead you to expect a ~525 hp rating with the 4.0 all else being equal. I'd probably just do that if I were them, or at most go to a 4.2L (104.5 bore w/ 81.5 stroke) and 550 hp. That'd be far easier, and would seem more than enough to sell a bundle at a significant premium to the RS.
Now, I would think that between dieselgate, all the competition upping the performance ante with FI, and a desire to align their halo cars with the rest of the newly turbocharged lineup, a top end NA power plant may be finding itself homeless, at least in the upcoming GT offerings. So I wouldn't be all that surprised if the 911R becomes the obvious place to drop such an engine. Especially if the 911R is the last of the NA heavy hitters, which would be an apt way to commemorate the 1967 original.

There were other rumors/publications that suggested 450 hp.
As much as I would rather have 550, the 450 figure seems a lot more believable.
Either way - going to be a really sad day when I finally realize I can't get one.

I don't see this car eclipsing the RS in power. I'm not still convinced it's going to get the 4.0 RS engine, but rather the GT3 engine.
If the R does get the recent 4.0L RS engine, I would bet that HP stays at 500 or detuned slightly to 490 to maintain the hierarchy of the 991 4.0 RS as the top of line NA Porsche car/engine.
The purists and manualists would be overjoyed just to get the 4.0L RS engine with a manual transmission in a lighter car. They don't need to be given an engine >500 HP, because those people will buy the R anyway, and Porsche won't **** off all their 991 RS owners.

These two solid numbers make the 550hp claim impossible:
-137hp/L.
->9000rpm
Never been done in the production car world.. Neither one.
This rumor, in the words of the artist formerly known as "less than 3mph".. Should be "repudiated"
Edit: this is the third time I've tried to enter the "less than" symbol in an attempt to make a joke which included mr "less than 3mph" and I can now see why he changed his name so I had to type out his whole name and the joke was lost. Oh well.

"It will almost certainly be matched to the engine from Porsche’s top-shelf naturally-aspirated 911, the GT3 RS, which is powered by a 368kW/460Nm 4.0-litre flat six".
"It will almost certainly.....". That sounds to me like magazine speak for "we don't really know but let's speculate anyway". As I recall, before the 991 GT3 was officially introduced there was a lot of similar inside information from magazine sources....much of it wrong.

I realize we have some reliable sources here, but I still don't understand why Porsche would do that.
