Default Can I do without the front axle lift option

I am close to pulling the trigger on a 15 GT3. It does not have the front axle lift option. I probably won't track the car more than a couple times a year.

I am told you don't need the front axle lift option. I don't have any experience with a GT3 but I have owned an M3. Is this option a necessity? Any advice is appreciated.

The lift only raises the front end 1.18 inches. That was too little for me to justify the cost. There are 3 different speed bumps near where I live and my car did not scrape any of them. The problem, as I see it, is if you need 2 more inches of clearance then the lift won't help you.

Absolutely mandatory in my opinion. Used it every drive in my 15 and 11 GT3s

Depends on where you live. I have a 997.1 RS (no lift) on its sixth splitter in 8 years. My 997.2 RS (with lift) never needed a splitter at all. The problem is not typically speed bumps. It is ramps in parking lots in high rises. If the ramp is steep and the entrance is too narrow to approach at an angle you are going to hit it. If you live in Kansas or somewhere flat, you'll be fine.....

I ordered the lift on my 991 RS. for me its essential.

Wouldn't buy one without it personally.

Oh boy here we go(: agree with the others depends on where you live. I wouldn't be able to enter my driveway without it, but minus that plenty places I frequent I need it also.

It's all about the 1 inch. That's all the difference. Not about speed bumps. About angles.

I have no definitive answer for you.

In part because the whole concept of "need" is an elusive notion.

But consider this.

The lift option is, what, about 3k? Give or take a few Benjamin's, right?

A replacement front splitter is about 200 (incl tax if you buy it from your dealer, or incl s/h if you order online, either way it's about two Bejamins).

So if you don't get the lift and live in an area where you're going to be scraping and bumping up driveways with your front end you're looking at 200 (give or take) to replace the part if you do it yourself, and maybe 50 more if you pay someone to do it.

If scraping and kissing asphalt is a regular unavoidable occurrence of your daily routine and drive then replacing the front splitter will become a typical regularly scheduled event just like, um, getting gas.

Some will say, so what. At those prices I can replace it 15 times and probably still come out ahead.

Others will say, I just dropped about a buck fifty on a car. Is three grand really going to matter that much in the grand scheme of things.

I have no answer for you. Except to say whether you think it's necessary or not really depends on your lifestyle and view of the world.

In any event those are the scenarios you're most likely looking at.

Congrats on the new car and enjoy!

Also don't forget that the lift could have an impact if you plan to resell the car at some point...

You don't need it...even in my 997 RS which has the lift I don't use it. I've driven low cars most of my life so I know how to handle driveways and speedbumps.

It depends on where you live.....

I've owned 3 GT cars (07 GT3, '11RS 3.8, '15 GT3), none of them have had lift and in 9 years have NEVER scraped the front lip on any of the 3 cars. I have 11 speed tables in my neighborhood and have yet to scrape on them, or my driveway. I purposely did NOT order the lift on my 991 GT3 because I don't need it. YMMV

It's tough on resale without big gas tank and lift. Those and LWB seem to be the most popular options.

I can't possibly say whether YOU need it, as I don't know where or how you drive or your tolerance for ugly scraping noises. I just know that I need it, both from a practical and psychological standpoint. The "more weight" argument is way overblown (it only adds 15 lbs), as is the complexity argument, as long as the car is under warranty. The argument that you can keep replacing spoiler lips doesn't take into account the fact that the spoiler is fairly rigid and a good whack could damage the bumper assembly which is far more expensive than a lip. The only real issue is price and after spending $150K on the rest of the car, an additional 2 percent is insignificant. If that doesn't sway you, it makes a cool wooshing sound when the car lowers which passengers love....
