I agree, this seems multifactorial, the design and lack of a clear coat. I took a close look at my wheels today and counted all the chips. The fronts have 7-10 and the rears have 4 each.
Here's a pic of the left front, it looks terrible.

Mike and others, do you think all of us should be calling PCNA?

David, I think it would be a good idea. I was told that the dealer should also be notified as that is the best channel for making a determination on what might qualify for warranty.

But PCNA was glad to get the info directly and established a case # for me. If nothing else, at least now it's documented with them and I think it's good for them to know this is not just an isolated issue. My $.02.

I called PCNA. They referred me to the dealer for a warranty claim. Yes, I do recommend calling.

The pic is after cleaning the wheel. I wheels also have been treated with ceramic pro. All of the white areas ARE chips, although the flash makes it looks worse.

Mike, OK I'll put a call in to PCNA next week.

It's a long thread, and I'm sorry if it's already been discussed, but assuming it is a warranty claim, what would the warranty cover or do?

New wheel?

Refinished wheel?

Something else?

Thanks.

What year is your car? Is this a 2014 issue? Or do we have 2015 wheels with lots of chips too?

No reason for wheels to chip like this, track or not.

Good question. I imagine it depends in part on whether it's just a bad paint batch or a universal problem related to the wheel design or paint process. No point in providing new wheels if people are just going to experience the same problem over again.

This is just another reason why I shouldn't wash my wheels(which I hate doing, but always waste so much time cleaning every crevice). Now they are so dirty, I have no idea how many chips I may have.

Seeing SanDiegoDavid's photo I agree the rim is a rock chip catcher. Mike's rims are just normal wear and tear (albeit, as he stated, accumulated at a faster rate).
Probably the aero and a soft finish coating. The latter may be improved but the design aero will continue pounding it on roads full of debris - our roads.

One option might be a hard impact anodization of some sort. I doubt clear coating will solve the problem - it will just mask it for a while and eventually get pitted through.

You have to realize that everything is a compromise. Sleek fan rims are attractive but they are more prone to this. The other thing is our roads are full of junk and it seems nobody cares.
