Autoweek/Andy Pilgrim 991 GT3 vs Z/28 at Barber Motorsport Park
Holy hell, it happened, they did it.
See attached.
Pilgrim: "If I had both in my garage it would be the GT3 for the street and Z/28 for the track...every time".
"I can say it's easier for me to go fast in the Z/28, and if I owned one, I'd sure go looking for GT3's to play with at any track day".
Pilgrim GT3 1:35.76, Pobst Z/28 1:36.17
Make all the jokes about weight and looks you like, it's Game-on boys...

The article just came out, I never in a million years thought we'd see a press test of the 991 GT3 vs Z/28. Never in a million years.
Chevy told them- bring whatever and whoever you got. Crazy off the hook insane. My head is about to explode. Wow

No worries. It's actually a .41 (four tenths difference) if you look at fastest laps of Pobst and Pilgrim (1:35.76 vs 1:36.17). Pilgrim vs Pilgrim .53 (1:35.76 vs 1:36.24) . Half a second difference. That is just insane when you consider $75k vs $150k. And no electronics shifting the Z or steering the rear wheels.

So after all their "vital" efforts to cut weight, the Camaro Z/28 weighs basically the SAME as the Camaro 1LE?
With 3,850lbs on 50 threadwear tires you'd be lucky to get a full track day out of a set of tires.
Maybe it's just me and I know I sound like a broken record but I just don't get the appeal of taking the C6 Z06 engine, putting it into a 500lbs heavier (GM) body shod with 50 threadwear (sticky) tires and calling it the best thing since sliced bread. I smell a lot of marketing BS on this one.
Cutting weight is vital as well to the Z/28's mission, with good weight savings coming from the engine, brakes and wheels, but engineers sweated the details and strived to cut out even more wherever they could. Because of this, air conditioning is an option; there's no sound-deadening material; and floor mats, trunk trim and even redundant wiring in the harness are gone. There's a lighter rear-seat assembly, smaller battery and thinner rear glass. All that brings base curb weight down to 3,820 pounds, which is 55 pounds lighter than a Camaro 1LE. If you do decide you don't want to bake in the summer heat on your way to and from the track, get your Z/28 equipped with the optional air conditioning that will up the weight to 3,851 pounds. The interior gets Recaro front-bucket sport seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
Also deserving of a great deal of the credit for the Z/28's tenacious grip are 305/30 ZR19 Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires at all corners that have a 50 treadwear rating.

Yea, that was my thought. Great to see US manufactures getting serious on the track day side, but I wouldn't get too excited about this as the tires were likely responsible for most of the result. On equal tires you're likely looking at well over 5 seconds delta around the 'Ring- very respectable, but not earth shattering.
I was autocrossing a stock '95 993 and a '67 912 on Saturday. The 993 had well over 2x the power, 255 tires vs 175, ABS, much lower ride height, three decades of technology and suspension, etc. But the 912's 175 / 70 / 15s were street legal but decently sticky, and the two cars were identically quick around the course. All tires...
Still fun to see, and when the Vette guys get serious with the lighter platform the story might be quite different.

Yep, the C7 Z06 will be a beast. Even the NA C7 Z51 with the same sticky tires and a slightly improved suspension would eat Z/28's lunch. A stock C6 Z06 should be able to do the same judging from the numbers (weight, HP) alone.

Chevy said: Bring whatever you want to compare, bring whoever you want to drive, and you can take the cars to drive around town, to the dragstrip and to the dyno if you like. When has Porsche ever put their nuts on the line like that? Never.
It's a transparent, objective presentation of a car as I've ever seen from any manufacturer. I'm not selling the car, nor need any reinforcement on my decision to buy. But I am deeply refreshed at the lack of marketing BS, cloak and dagger, smoke and mirrors such as I got from Porsche. I respect that.
I'm going to leave you fine folks to ruminate amongst yourselves for some ten's of pages. It's fantastic to have the choices we have as car guys

OK, then someone should bring a $20k cheaper and 500lbs lighter C7 Z51 or a C6 Z06 wearing the same tires as the Z/28 and run circles around it then do the same for days after its tires get toasted. Only in an alternate universe could a company (GM) market a "race/track weapon" that is 500lbs (can't believe this so easily dismissed, as if we're talking 50lbs) heavier than another model from its own line-up which supposedly is not (a race/track weapon). This is where I smell the BS -- not in the comparison with Porsche or Ferrari.
