991.1 Gt3rs vs 991.2 Gt3
I’m in the market for a 911 after having sold my modded 996tt many years back. The prices for a 991.1 Gt3rs and 991.2 Gt3 are really similar (at least in my area).
I’m trying to find direct comparison between the two cars on the internet but can’t find anything good. I’m probably gonna go PDK so it complicates the choice otherwise it’d be the Gt3.
So for future value I’m guessing the Gt3rs would be a better pick. More value is already lost, the look is more extreme and less were produced so it’ll probably hold more value over time which is good.
But how about track times? It seems the Gt3 is a bit quicker that the RS. Is it the case? Anyone can provide more info on this? It’s as if no one thinks of heading both cars against each other. Nürburgring times have the Gt3 ahead of the 991.1 gt3rs Which seems odd.
I’d like to have the quicker car. If the Gt3 happens to be quicker and be more easy to live with (less extreme) it might steer me that way. For now I’m thinking 991.1 Gt3rs should be in my garage.
Any help, info or first hand experience with both cars appreciated.

You're in luck because I believe you could spend the next three days reading threads on this topic. Likewise, there is a YT influencer who has posted many 'value' videos that indicate his interpretation regarding the depreciation curve on these cars, including the .2 GT3RS.
I would buy the one you really want, the one that does it for you. Then invest the time and money in becoming proficient on the track. You can scour the threads here and read about what people on this forum accomplished with their .1 GT3 and RS and .2 GT3 and RS. It's all over the place and largely a factor of driver skill, car setup, track setup and weather. It is easy to buy the faster car a pro can lap...much different reality when you're behind the wheel pushing your own car, which is largely limited by skill.
Might be difficult for you under todays circumstance to get out and drive both, but would be a good place to start if you're really unsure.
Good luck!

i think the RS looks better.
but manual matters more to me. if there was a manual RS there would be no question.

I think value over time is a tossup for a multitude of factors. As per advice above, buy the one that really speaks to you.
As far as performance, also a tossup to the average DE driver. You're likely never going to approach the limit of either car. Maybe just enjoying getting better and trying rather than bench racing which is faster on paper.
I owned the 991.1 RS for around 20k miles and a lot of track time. I've also had a decent amount of time behind the wheel of a .2 GT3. If it was my money, the .2 is the better do everything car that will stay below the radar (if that's important). RS is the better track focused weekender. You really can't go wrong.

I've owned both, tracked both. No comment on future value - I don't have a crystal ball. But for driving the cars I preferred the .2 GT3.

Thanks guys!
A bit of background I raced F2000 and instructed for BMWCCA for many years. I took a break due to kids being young and making wise financial decisions (racing cars cost a lot).
I’m back but this time no more instructing, too many people in too powerful cars not knowing what they’re doing. Also done are my carry a trailer and spare tires and parts. I’m now an arrive and drive kind of guy.
I think I didn’t search back far enough. Indeed some interesting threads about the .1rs and .2gt3. But still very few videos of same driver, same day featuring these two cars. But I get that the bottom line is these two cars are closely matched and is pretty much a matter of preferences. Makes me even reconsider the .1gt3 with its 10year warranty...

OP- IMHO, in the future, the 991.1 RS will not be looked on favorably due to the engine flaws. Despite PCNA standing up and honoring the motor replacements as they come up- the fact remains it is a weakness compared to the 991.2 and there is not an 'official' warranty extension like the 991.1 GT3. Yes, not many failures out there, but they do exist and can and will continue to happen as have been posted here recently. Fair warning...

If you look at multiple track times, the two cars are virtually equivalent. The power to weight ratio slightly favors the .2 GT3. The .2 GT3 was only 7 or 8 seconds faster around the 'ring. And a few of those seconds may be tire related.
The .2 GT3 engine is probably better. Although the .1 GT3RS does not have the number of reported engine issues that the .1 GT3 does. Nor does it have the 10-year engine warranty.
Both are great street cars. Not as 'raw' as the .1 GT3. And nothing like the older GT cars or the .2 GT3RS (which may be the best one so far).
The higher wing on the 3RS makes rear vision a bit better. The GT3 may have warranty remaining.
Get the one you like the looks of and the interior, electronics, etc. Really no wrong answer.

I've owned a GT3-1, GT3-2 and GT3RS-1 and read most reviews of the GT3RS-2. If you are looking
for the quicker Car on Track, the GT3RS-2 will unquestioningly be slightly faster and more "Hard Core"
and possibly more reliable than the "G" Series First Generation Engine in the GT3RS-1 but noisier
and harder riding for DD use.Keep in mind that differences in lap times on both cars are small and
will likely depend far more on driver skill than car model. You can't go wrong with either model.

That’s what I was thinking, if I’m going manual I might go for a car that was designed as a manual.
I think it is nice from Porsche to offer a manual in the 991.2 Gt3, for sure. But even though I never drove one, I get the feeling the car was meant to be PDK. The quickness at which the revs rise and the overall quickness of the car is more suited for the PDK.
My old 996TT with the x50 would require full attention as I would go through revs quite rapidly and that was a 11.9sec in the 1/4 mile. The manual in the new GT3 puts the driver in the way of maximum performance. But it is more involving so the reward is not the lap times but the overall interaction with the car.
My first F2000 was manual, part of my success then was that I had a better control of the transmission compared to other drivers. When we switched to sequential transmissions, I lost that edge. Everyone got quicker but some gained more than others. In a competitive setting having a manual amongst PDK boxes would put me at a disadvantage. But only if I care about lap times, which is not tolerated in BMWCCA.
That’s a tough decision. I think I’m leaning towards PDK still but if the right manual GT3 comes along I might go that way.

If pdk, my vote is the RS, unless u want something not quite as "visible". While the 991.1-3 engine definitely has the stigma, the 991.1-3rs has been as bullet-proof as any of the gen 2's. I think the engine is BETTER in the gen 2 but I'd still take a pdk 991.1rs over. 991.2 Gt3. Why? Just because that's what I'd prefer. The cars are close enough across the board that u just need to pick whichever stirs you more.
