Default Track Insurance

What type of track insurance do people here normally get?

OpenTrack quoted me $800 for a single day. Seems unreasonable.

I use http://opentrack.com

Basically a stated value policy that would insure my RS (other places wouldn't insure it for the full value). It's expensive, but gives me peace of mind. I pay roughly in the ballpark of what you were quoted for a 2-day HPDE event for ~175k of protection.

Depends what your risk tolerance is... $800 is on par with what I've seen for 2-day events.

You can be a great driver and have a coolant spill in front of you and wad up in an instant. That's it.

I don't know about you, but this car isn't small money to me and insurance is the price of admission.

I also use opentrack. Just two weeks back I did comparison shopping prior to a 2 day event at Road America. Here was the comparison. Made it as apples to apples as possible. $165K coverage with 10% deductible.

OpenTrack $871
Hagerty (RLI) $1208
Lockton $NA They wanted me to call.
OnTrack $1153
RLI $1208
NCM (Lockton) $1004

BTW, I also insure always. It has paid once. Cat and mouse with my son out on the track in the wet. Junior ended up in a wall. He was fine (except for his ego). The car was considered totaled and insurance paid.

Open track user here, I would never track my car without insurance.

PM me, my agent (an avid track enthusiast) has a carrier that will cover DE under your auto policy, not cheap but if your do 3-4 events per year - breakeven is sustained.

I've found out that the available insurance carriers depend on the track and the sponsoring group for the DE. I've found the online quote/application process for OpenTrack to be unreliable. So far, I've used two companies: Hagerty for Watkinbs Glen with a Porsche club https://www.hagerty.com/insurance/track-day-insurance , and Lockton Affinity for Road America with Shelby Club https://locktonmotorsports.com/ .

As to price, it all depends on what you value your car at and what deductible you are willing to pay. I placed the value of my car at MSRP, chose 10% deductible, and I got policies for $1K for 3 days for each DE. This covers damage to your property/car while driving on track, with a rider for track damage and debris, and nothing else. That's all you need. Everything else outside the track , like at the paddock or driving to the hotels, is covered by your regular insurance. Heaven forbid you should get hurt, that's covered by your health insurance. With that in mind, $800 for 1 day seems excessive. Click on the links I provided above, and they can give you a quote, as long as the track and event are on their calendar.

+1 for open track. None of this is cheap, why should insurance be any different.

Good weather, open track then no insurance. Tight, unfamiliar or raining then buy insurance

yeah gotta pay to play. or buy a cheap dedicated track car that you won't mind if it gets totaled. Can probably get a miata or 986 for the price of a few $800 insurance premiums

Open Track every time I track which is once a month. If someone has a better connection, please let me know. I am paying the 7-800 per weekend DE with with my RS but peace of mind for sure.

Open track for me. I purchased the annual coverage since I tended (pre COVID) to track multiple times per month. Like tires, brakes, fluid changes, track alignment, suit, gloves, shoes, center lock wrench, track fees, and the car, it all adds up to one expensive hobby.

Never had an issue getting an Open Track policy online. While $800 can seem like a lot you didn't provide any details other than for a day. How much are you insuring for and did you check any other boxes (i.e. liability insurance.)?

I also use open track, personally never had a problem with getting a policy online, fortunately never had to claim but a friend has and they were easy to deal with and payment made promptly. The one day policies are expensive, multi-day events are about the same price. I usually purchase their annual policy.
