Seriously why would you even consider buying your college kid a Porsche? Cars get destroyed in college. They get dinged, scrapped, broken in and damaged.

For some families, the Porsche IS the beater car. Relax!

Had one more thought on this -

Make a deal with her - beater now, and upon graduation if her GPA is perfect - she gets 150k to buy a car with. For a 3.5 she gets 75k, for 3.0 ....etc.....motivate her and save money in the meantime.

Honestly, you may feel good about buying her an amazing car, but you might not be doing her the best thing.

The best things in life aren't the free material things given to you, but the triumphs earned. Not recommending a Triumph, by the way.

Her focus in the next four years is going to be college and programming what lies between her ears for her future. A simple and reliable Honda would get her around with the minimum of worry and risk. It also should be the least distraction from her education.

As much as we want to give our children the best in life, letting them earn those rewards for themselves will give them the greatest joy and pride in their good work. I wouldn't take that away from her as much as it might pain you. You'll be even more proud when she reaches her goals from the hard work she invested all on her own.

Maybe a Subaru SUV, little higher ride than a regular car, and four wheel drive.
Good'n safe

New stick shift civic - $18k (save the manuals, buy new manuals!)
New stick shift mazda3 - $22k
2007 987.1 base Cayman - $15k

just saying.

I think it’s funny how people in the internet like to tell other people on the internet how to raise their kids but I guess without this discussion it would be no fun.

My parents made huge sacrifices for me when I was a kid and I am forever grateful and I ended up figuring out how to pay for college myself and started off with a frugal life. My wife’s parents never gave her anything and it’s just made her want stuff more, which is how I ended up on rennlist. Otherwise I would have had less costly hobbies. Happy wife happy life they said. Depends on the kid, depends on the parents, and depends on the situation.
