it was certainly surprising to see the number somehow go from 70 million to 17 million

Yes ... not very impressive. All of auction houses are guilty of the same issue ... over estimating, or allowing their seller's to overestimate, to attract inventory to their auctions. But in the long run it damages their credibility and ultimately it becomes a joke.
