If I speed and you catch me fine. Making the world a better place by playing a glorious flat 6 sound....NO. One of my best memories as a kid was a screaming Ferrari accelerating fast!! If nothing else I need to do this for the kids in my town!

Seriously though I think this is lame. I guess it is the law (didn't know but I guess started in 2017) but I also have the right to fight it. If nothing else I will keep this officer from giving someone else a lame ticket for the morning.

BS call the cop’s bluff, there is no such law against as accelerating too fast (it’s either you are above the posted speed limit or you were deemed reckless) but accelerating too fast is total BS. The cop is trying to get one over on you because he couldn’t/didn’t legally clock you with an approved & properly calibrated speed detection device. A cop once tried this crap on me when I had my Turbo S, i asked him politely what traffic law I had broken? I told told my car does 0-60mph in 2.9 secs, but I never exceeded 55mph (posted limit was 50mph). He let me go without a ticket once it was clear that I had not broken any laws. There is no law against accelerating too fast, AFAIK.

Did you do 0-60 under 3 seconds? If no, contest!

Thanks for the heads up. Good to know what the laws are and what to be cautious of.

This article explains the California version of the exhibition of speed laws. Yes, it's real, yes you can get a ticket for accelerating too hard, yes it could be a criminal conviction and not just traffic. Yes, you should get a lawyer 😀

It's a legal racketeering scheme which the government is using to collect money from the sheep. In turn, they use that money to pay off the army of enforcers like the police department, the courts, prosecutors and even defense lawyers. All in the name of " safety " of course...
If you didn't do a big burnout, chirping tires etc...fight the racketeering cohorts to the end! Let them prove in one of their racketeering courts of " law " how they measure " accelerating too fast ".

Subjective laws like this are problematic but I can understand there needs to be something where it's difficult to define/measure a dangerous act.

If you weren't racing someone, timing yourself, and you weren't doing a burnout in front of a crowd at cars and coffee I would argue the definition/intent of the words "racing" and "exhibition". I don't think the intent is to prohibit a simple fast acceleration but an actual "exhibition" as in putting on a show for someone or a group. If you weren't racing/timing then I don't see how you were "speed racing".

You definitely want to fight that ticket. I previously was issued a "speed racing" ticket and it carries hefty points on your driving record...similar to street racing. If there wasn't another vehicle that you were caught "speed racing" next to, then you will have a stronger case.

In my situation, I was on my sport bike, next to another friend, and we sped off from a light. But we never broke the speed limit. It also occurred in Washington County... like Montoya above. Luckily mine was dropped in court.

Many years ago I was cited for " speed greater than reasonable and prudent " meaning we caught you but can't prove it because you were being careful not to get caught...

Moral of the story if you are going to gun it off the line, on the street, be prepared to pay the price. It is reckless however you cut it. And I am also guilty of this but why some one would be surprised they got caught and a ticket is surprising.

Now- all the power if you can get off and I do not blame you for fighting it

Did the same thing once and cop pulled me over (of course I didn’t see him hiding behind a few other cars).

Thought I was done as I did accelerate past the posted limit.

He spent 10seconds telling me to slow it down and 20mins talking about the car! (Part of me wonders if he pulled me over just to talk about car).

He was a good guy and knew his stuff about Porsche’s.

(Having recently moved to TN - the police here are much “friendlier” than what I dealt with in New England. ).

Maybe just depends where in the country you are?

Just an aggressive exhaust note can generate a false impression of speed. I bet if you were in a Tesla you would not have been cited.

Agreed....we're likely all guilty of it though.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless you did it off the line beside the cop...

When I drive through Oregon I notice how much lower over the speed limit traffic moves vs California. My takeaway was that enforcement is relatively strict...
