You will know when you’ve driven both for a while. I have never driven a GT2 RS or a Touring so can’t comment one way or the other. But good luck!

Lots of good comments, thanks everyone. In terms of "in that price range there's also" - yes, I hear you, but one of the appeals of the 2RS is that it's still a Porsche. I don't have any interest in a Mclaren or Ferrari. The 2RS isn't exactly a sleeper, but at least it's still "just" a Porsche. There's some comfort there for me. I don't want to get into exotics and be "that guy" when I'm driving, though I'm sure the 2RS will garner some attention. For the comment on wingless GT cars, that's actually part of why I love the Touring, to the untrained eye it's just another 911, of which there are plenty where I live. The 2RS would have to be special enough for me to live with that.

Least expensive pair that give the track ability and the street ability is GT3RS and a Carrera T with MT and they together can cost less than a 2RS. While the GT2 clearly has a different engine and standard PCCB's not a lot of other differences.

The Carrera T seems mostly like a (successful) branding exercise from Porsche, the weight loss over the standard Carrera is negligible. Doesn't interest or excite me at all. A manual GT3 and GT3RS would be too close for me for the same kind of combo, at a bit higher price point.

I've owned both. I like the .2 RS over both the 2RS and the GT3 touring. For me the 2RS wasn't 100k better car than the .2 3RS. It was awesome though, very special car. And the .2 3RS was better than GT3. But that's not your question.
If I had to choose between the 2RS and GT3 touring, I'd pick GT3.
My dead mans car (whatever that means - I don't keep cars a long time) is a 997RS, if that helps you assess whether my answer/opinion is a useful datapoint.

I havent driven a GT2RS, Im sure its great but in my mind a GT3 manual is what a 911 is all about. Flat 6 out back, great engine, revs, raw, involoving, simple, light etc. I know 991s have a lot of modern tech vs air cooled cars but the personality is still there. 992 moving in the wrong direction across the board and you will be able to get a turbo, auto shifting fast porsche for a long while. Not sure how much life is left in the N/A manual and not sure the 992 will be a better 911 than the 991.
Realize people said the same thing from 997 to 991 but the difference to me is that 1) 991 was lighter than the 997 despite all of the modern tech and 2) Seems like most felt the 991 was a visual upgrade. Other than irrelevant performance numbers 992 doesnt really give us a better 911 based on criteria above from what I can tell.

Totally agree on that, which is why (in my mind) the 2RS has its work cut out for it if it's going to be able to displace the GT3.
It'll be quite a while before something shows up that dethrones the 2RS, but it will come out. I do feel like Porsche learnt a valuable lesson with the manual, and I'd be surprised if the 992 doesn't offer a manual with the GT3. Will it be the cracking 6 speed? No idea...

Most feel 991 GT's are better looking than 997's? Hmm, your most people are different than mine. I think most people think the 997 RS's specifically are potentially best looking water pumper 911s ever made and up there with some of the prettier a/c's, but that's all subjective stuff.

Maybe GT weights from 997 to 991 didnt move in the same direction as the Carreras but 991 was broadly billed as the first 911 to weigh less than its predecessor. For whatever its worth my 991.2 GT3 weighed less on the actual scale by ~40lbs than my 997.1 GT3 but the new one has LWB and ceramics so not a fair comparison.
Looks definetely subjective. I just dont remeber the amount of complaining on style decisions with the 991 that we are hearing on 992.

At MSRP, the GT2RS is a no-brainer. As a long term keeper, honestly I would think the GT3T might be more fun. I’ve had a turbo PDK car (not a GT car) and after a while the insane power + PDK can be numbing. A manual transmission, naturally aspirated car will always retain that refreshing engagement over the long term. If your question was which to keep, until your next car, then I’d have said GT2RS. However for the long haul, a manual NA car is hard to beat, especially with the .2 GT3 MT being described as amongst the best ever.

True, both of you, the one that makes you feel special. Initially I didn't like the more rounded look of the GT2RS, but now I've gotten to the point where I actually thinks it's the most well proportioned of the GT lineup. Will have to wait a bit with the driving comparison! Which is why I'm trying to kill time with youtube videos and soliciting opinions of the experts in here.
The touring is a great road car. Gt2 RS has more mystique.
The manual is really good in your car. The GT2 RS can be driven with the paddles or the shifter, but it is not a manual.
Track = GT2 RS. You have a great track there to drive on.
Roads = Touring.

i think the 2rs will be the keeper in the mid-term, until the next 2rs is out, because it seems to derive more of its value from being the king of the hill. Once no longer that amongst other manufacture options, but especially amongst upcoming Porsche’s, it loses some luster imo. Over long haul, maybe the gt3 retains more nostalgic appeal, but they made a crap ton. I don’t see any of the 991 lineup being “keepers” other than R and maybe speedster. Even if the 992 gt’s aren’t as well received as the 991 gen, they made enough that you won’t have any problem picking one up again at a later date.
What ends up being a keeper will be as much determined by what comes after it and i don't think we know enough about that yet.
