Hey there folks. I just wanted to see peoples opinion on 991.1 GT3 RS values. Seems like People resold them round the tune of $250k around a year ago, but now most are sitting in the 210-220 range which a handful are now in the 190k range. If we were speculate, why are GT3 RS values plummeting? Do you think $190k will be the norm thus positioning some outliers in the 180k range and less?
Plummeting? not quite. A 10% market adjustment in the last 12 months is not plummeting.
Supply and demand. With allocations of .2 991 GT3 RS being awarded to VIP customers, the normal trade-in is a 991.1 GT3 RS, but plummeting is far from the expected price adjustment.
Plummeting (real life examples):
- House prices in some U.S. markets in 2008
- Any non-911 Porsche value after 2 years (especially the large SUVs), and some 991 models too.
- Any Bentley, McLaren, Mercedes, BMW, Audi used value after a year (except the hyper cars, and very limited production cars)
Not too long ago you could buy a 997.1 GT3 RS under $100k, now that's the price for a clean 996 GT3.
The natural progression if you want a fun car, track capable, track resistant, with only 2 pedals: 991.1 GT3 > 991.1 GT3RS > 991.2 GT3 > 991.2 GT3 RS > 991.2 GT2 RS. Pick your target budget, choose car. Other car brands have downsides (flammable, exploding, overheating, limp, etc.).
If U.S./Canada still have 30% of the 991 GT3 market (lets say 1500 cars), that's about the right number for good resale.
I know I can get a 991.2 GT3 RS with later summer delivery for $275k just writing a check, and a 991.2 GT2 RS today for $550k, but $190k won't buy me a near new 991.1 GT3 RS today.
There are about 100ish 991.1 RS's for sale in the US market right now - and probably because of they hype of the new cars and the change in demographic.... think the guy who's got to have it/investor, and now new bling so is selling or the investment picture doesn't look as bright. Most are very low mileage - some not even broken in yet, which would lead one to think investors bought up cars on speculation and now the picture doesn't look so great; time value of money, take loss, sell and get something else. Looks like an organized gradual dump over the last 10 or 12 months, but the cars are selling when priced right.
I predict they will go down then up and not necessarily in that order. you can quote me to your friends on that.
The 991.1 RS is a hell of a car. it's no longer the latest/greatest, but is (performance wise) within striking distance stock for stock of any GT3 on the planet. In a straight line the first one to hit the go pedal or with the better traction will win. You can see this on Youtube with the various drag races sometimes beating cars with better power to weight ratios. On the track, better tires, suspension/alignment set up or familiarity with the track wins. the rest is just bench racing.
For other context consider the Supra Turbo - there were 4000 of those made... decent run number. 20 years later they're pretty collectible.
It’s worth noting that the 991.1 GT3 RS was released during the peak of the exotic car bubble / demand. Back then the speculation on exotic car values was crazy. Now the market is starting to cool, which shows with the .2. RS ADM being noticeably lower than the .1 RS ADM.
I don't see the .1 RS going much lower than $150-175k for a long time. Heck, these new .2 RS cars are going to be selling for $240-300k for awhile. With 25k ADM (which a lot of people have paid and more), the spec can easily exceed $270k. So to me, the .1 looks like a pretty descent value.
The .2RS may also be lower because the GT2RS was released at the same time where the .1RS was running by itself at the time. These cycles are normal with all the cars that come out HOT then sink for a bit and then get hot again. My 997.2RS was hot when I bought it cooled off when I sold it and now they are getting over the original MSRP for the cars. There is always a reason for the hype...Last Air Cooled, Last manual, Last car with no nanny... and the list goes on. I don't buy a car based on the "flip" value and don't chastise folks that do.Buying and flipping is market driven not the fault of the owner doing it. I bought my last RS for MSRP drove it for 2 years and sold it for more. Am I a flipper??? I sold it to get the new one. How is that different? Are the folks that sell their last air cooled Turbo for double MSRP flippers or is there a time frame the we Rennlisters assign to make us the authority on "the flip" because we can't have what we want? Just a question maybe worth asking!

The 991.1 rs is a good buy at $175ish. The .2rs is not worth 265k, that's why I won't be getting one. My desire spec was right around 265 with the lowerst adm I found. Not worth it in my eyes.

Totally understand your thoughts, but the market disagrees today. I'm happily paying the money, but that's because I want the car. I plan on keeping it for a long time (or until the 992.2 GT3RS is bigger, better and faster ). I totally plan on losing some money on this car, but it's still cheaper than the money I lose on airplanes!
I think the price differential between the .1 and .2 RS is pretty close to the differential (% wise) between the .1 and .2 GT3. Both .1’s provide excellent value and 95% of the performance, but if you want the latest and greatest, it will cost you.
Great time to buy either .1’s IMO but the .2’s are special. Wait until videos of a .2 RS walking away for the .2 GT3 start surfacing. Prices should stay firm for all GT cars until the 992 NA 575 HP GT3 (PDK and MT) running sub 7 second Ring times rocks up. You know, the one that is 150 pounds lighter, has 30% more downforce, and runs mid 10’s in the 1/4.
Maybe not to you, but I'm sure someone will have no problem writing that check...especially when cars start to hit (impulse buys).
My .2RS is $203 (perfect spec might I add). I think even for those paying $230-$250k this car is worth every penny. Or you can pay double and get a GT2 LOL.

I agree, like many on rennlist, there are plenty of people that will pay 250k or more for an RS. I said in my eyes, not worth it and that's why I won't get one. Different strokes for different folks. I have a pista coming in at msrp, so I'll be fine

Yup, the market does disagree with my thoughts. Supply and demand. I just said in my eyes, its not worth it. Plenty of money out there right now and Porsche has a good product.
