GT3 RS Rumors
Heard some interesting news about the 991 GT3RS the other day. I consider the source to be pretty reliable given his history of Porsche ownership and he got his news from PCNA.
He was told:
- RS will have a 4.0L engine, with 525HP-550HP (apparently the DFI has huge potential)
- Manual may be a $0 option (but no decision made yet), PDKS definitely in
- Lots of carbon fibre bits a la GT2, will definitely weigh less than GT3
- Possibly $30-50K more than GT3
- Orders in Feb/March 2014 and deliveries in summer 2014
The GT3 will not have sport bucket seats according to PCNA, end of story. No news on the nose lift kit for North America.

I was at my dealership yesterday and I was just talking about possibilities for the RS. They said since the gt3 is wider now. The turbo should be a tad wider and the RS will be as wide as the turbo. Definitely 500 plus hp but they didn't say anything about a 4L. Of course we have a whole year to speculate on everything

I have no information, just pure speculation because its fun. I'm guessing a 4.0L too and easily above the 500HP mark. I'd expect a manual option or something in between that mimicks the sequential.
Seems like with the GT3 going a tad softer to appeal to more people, the RS can go a tad more towards the race car spectrum. Then its a win-win all around.

IMO I can't see them moving away from the PDK once they've made the break with the GT3. Wider, lighter, +power, displacement and exclusivity all sell for more so they will do all of the above.

Anyway, no matter how much better it is - I'm pulling a trigger on the regular GT3. Cannot wait even more. After 2-3 years I'd probably use it as a cruiser anyway and get a real track car (BAC Mono or FormulaSPEED2.0 seem to be interesting).

The information Im hearing from factory personnel is that the 3.8 in the new GT3 is already good for 500 bhp with little modification. The 475 they state is very conservative and realistically most production engines will be putting out more than this. I would say with an airbox/exhaust mod and some mild ecu tuning the current GT3 will make 500 bhp with ease!
So where does this leave the GT3RS. The factory haven't decided yet on final spec although they know what direction they are taking (i.e. more hardcore or more mainstream).
Expect the GT3RS to pack 500bhp (claimed). Expect the 3.8L to remain. Expect PDK-S as an option or only choice. Expect 45-55kg weight saving through lighter seats, more basic trim and some lighter composite compoentry. Suspension and chassis will be tweaked. Dont expect a big jump over the GT3 in this series, it will likely be a more subtle make over of the GT3 like back when the 997.1 GT3RS was launched.
Remember there is a 99.2 GT3 and RS to consider too and the GT3 has ready taken a big enough leap of change already so dont expect that to continue by the same magnitude with the RS....

RS owners have consistently asked for harder core and greater separation over the base GT3. Porsche got the message with the last gen and the ask hasn't changed. One would hope they don't take a step backwards.
Massive potential to be had between lighter, stiffer tub, lighter 9A1 engine, and improved wheelbase/track. If they put in a proper 6 speed manual instead of the heavy PDK-derived 7 speed it could easily break below the magic 3,0000lb number.

I agree. I can conjure cynical reasons on the part of PCNA (not Porsche per se as they are obviously ok with using them ROW) involving low volumes and cost to certify for the 991 chassis, discouraging track use for warranty purposes, what have you. There are still almost 10 months before cars get delivered here. I'm hoping someone has time to come to their senses before then.
