Default Gen 2 Airbag Removal - HOW?

Gents,

I want to remove my steering wheel so that I can send it off for re-trimming. I mistakenly assumed it would be just like the Gen 1 cars which had (well my old one did), a hole on on the underside of the wheel which you could insert a screwdriver into and so release the airbag. This would then allow access to the bolt retaining the wheel.

My Gen 2 wheel (pic below), doesn't have the same hole which is used to release the airbag. Can anyone assist?

Thanks,

Actually, you have the right idea. There is a hole to push up through underneath, but it is covered with a thin layer of upholstery. You have to break through it. You'll feel the small indent/blister where the hole is. Punch through it

Great, thanks. Wheel off and now I need to separate the plastic trim etc from the wheel. Hate all these plastic clips!

Thanks for the link....I didn't actually go through the procedure noted before disconnecting the battery. No key in the ignition, I disconnected the negative terminal and waited about 5 mins before removing the airbag and wheel from the car. I'll now leave the battery disconnected for the week or so it'll take to get the wheel re-trimmed.

Should that be ok?

You should be OK. Worst case scenario is you go to the dealer to have the CEL reset or buy a durametric cable (what I did). Post pictures when you get the wheel re-trimmed. What are you having done?

btw, the silver belts in your silver spyder look good

Just having it re-trimmed to replicate the 2010 GT3 RS wheel. Like this...

I'm feeling a little pathetic! But am I correct in assuming that I have to somehow prize off the plastic "T" shaped fascia?

What a hell of a job that was..!!!

I have a question about the "T" piece of the wheel. What do you think about having it painted body colour? I'll start a new thread to ask opinions
