yeah likely also because I push it harder than most other drivers out there...which is why I've walked away with fastest time at the last two events among 60+ cars, half of them Porsche, and despite it being a 6-speed manual. The R is in SS class, same as the latest GT3, GT4 and RS cars with additional 200+ hp. The latest 911 models, even RS models, are just too heavy IMO. Kills them in the sharp corners.

the R is the best Cayman imo, and for autox those GT cars are to big/heavy. Autox isn’t a HP game necessarily . I’d rather have tire and suspension setup right vs 200hp more… granted if the drivers aren’t as skilled then the best car in the world won’t win them best times

You are exactly right. Ron Bauer and Keith Brown are two local guys that usually score at Lincoln each year. There are a few more as well. So, when they moved up to the 718 GTS or the new GT4RS, its very difficult to see any parity. 3 or 4 GT3 with new tires and 5-6 new 718GTS also with the hot tire, well its a long day for the rest of us. The 987 is now a couple of seconds off the top time. As a corner worker, you can just hear the start of these motors spinning their A052 tires all the way to 8000-9000 rpm depending on the model.

agree.. some of those newer cars will prevail (driver dependent). I’ve autox the cayman once and The GT3 a few… the cayman felt faster imo but it wasn’t.
now, on a road course..no match! GT3 would kill it. I autox for years with MR2 and an Exige… it’s not as fun for me these days

I guess if the newer cars weren’t faster you’d start to wonder.. I would like to see a 4.5L deman in a 987… wowza… I’ve expressed interest on the P-9 sight to that setup.

Do the 982 GTS models have adjustable front control arms?

Some of its stable mates. They're great, but not as enticing

Given the crazy used car market these last two years, decided to sell the 991 garage queen and use the proceeds to buy these two

Just wanted to say, how do you compare these two. The Cayman needs a few mods to update it's suspension. With Ohlin coilovers, Numeric shifter and cables, Wavetrac LSD, Sprint Booster, wheel spacers. With a good alignment and lower ride height using engine braking, you should be good to go.with a very toss-able car.

I must confess that both cars are beyond my driving capabilities. Haven’t tracked either but on the country back roads, the Mach 1 feels like the hulk, asking me “is that all? Maybe you need to step it up.” The Cayman is more like “I think I can go faster but I am ok dancing with you at this pace.”

I just felt that the Cayman suspension could be more suitable to my driving style. Lower ride height to reduce the center of gravity with Ohlin's making more of a slalom dancer

Very cool pair of garage mates! Does the Mach have the Handling Pack or not? And from a personal point of interest, how would you compare the steering feel of the two?

No HP on the Mach 1. Since I wasn’t planning to track the car, I found the HP’s front splitter just too low for daily use. Ditto with the cup 2 tires. As for your second question, I need to give some history: I was spoiled by my first Porsche - a base 987 Boxster that I bought in 2005. It had the most precise steering feel I ever had. Foolishly, I sold it and bought a 991.1 since it was an aspirational car. Was never happy with the electric power steering of that car, as compared with the Boxster. The Mach 1 came next and, on its firmest level, it came close to the 991. Don’t get me wrong; it is precise but in order to get some weight and firmness, I have to keep it in the sports setting. Hence, I decided I really wanted the feel of an hydraulic power steering and got the Cayman. It feels even better than my original Boxster.
