The truth is the 996/986 RMS is an oil leak from a seal. It can be repaired. Out of warranty cost is approximately $800.

"P-cars don't seem to be what they were 10 years ago." You mean they are better now, right? Ten years ago one could buy a new 993 and Porsche was in deep financial doo doo. Today Porsche is in fine financial shape and one can buy a Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman S, several 997 variations, and several Cayenne variations. Soon to come, the 4-door, the base Cayman, the 997 GT3, and a pick-up truck (okay, so I'm not sure about the pick-up). These are the good ole days of the future.

All I'm sayin' is they don't make them like they used to. And the numbers tell the story - look at retained values of 993's vs 996's.... any comments?
I think the market has spoken. I hope the new generation P-Cars - 997, etc fair better....

Ah ha! I think we've got to the crux of the issue.....
Yes, I think this thread confims a few people think the cayman is expensive for what it is. BUT, that will limit the buyers, keep production numbers down while maintaining revenue and voila = customers are happy again because their cars retain value and porsche keeps the $$'s rolling in and developing new toys....
Well done Porsche!!
More of the RS cars please.... and less of the pick up trucks...

Jim Michaels, Here, Here! You hit it on the head. P-Cars are better today and offer more performance for the money. Lets compare. When the 993 was introduced in 1995, base cost was $51.9K for a 272 hp at 6100 rpm/ 243 lb/ft torque, 3100 lb car. 0 to 60 performance of 5.5 seconds. Enter the Cayman at $59K for a 295hp at 6200 rpm / 250 lb/ft torque, 2955 lb car. 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds. Now lets do the inflation math, uh, 3 % per year x 11 years x the square root of..... Ah hell, you get the point. More performance at less cost. Thank you Porsche!

Also, my grandfather sez, they don't make 'em how they used to. But I think he's referring to the 60's & 70's.

Which is better looking is a matter of personal preference, and being air-cooled with 2 valves per cylinder shouldn't be a plus over water-cooled with 4 valves per cylinder. I agree that the 996, like the 964, won't be considered among Porsche's best 911 renderings, and the 993 and the 997 are significant improvements over the models they replaced. From what I've read, the 997 recovers some of the raw driving feel some thought was missing in the 996, and without offending those interested in maintaining comfort and convienence. Wasn't this once a Cayman comments thread?
