And to my knowledge, a top-level Audi hasn't ever beaten a top-level Porsche. I don't think they've ever even raced in the same race.

And we probably won't ever see it. An LMP1 Le Mans car cost so much that a big company like Audi can outspend a smaller company like Porsche. At that level of racing it would be nearly impossible for Porsche to win which is why they built an LMP2 car instead.

However, let's not forget that Porshe used to beat the likes of Ford and Ferrai and was much smaller at that time. They are now profit drriven. And that is ok too.

Porsche is in the enviable position of asking $70K for a Cayman that's probably worth $55K because:
It can!!

The average income of a Porshaphile is something like $500,000. For a boutique car builder like Porsche, life is good right now. That Cayenne is the best thing/worst thing that ever happened to this brand and they are laughing all the way to the Deutsche Bank.

According to a 2005 JD Powers study, as quoted by ForbesAuto.com, the average household income for new Porsche car buyers is $187,707 and for new Cayennes it's $199,733. PAG press releases have pegged the average HHI of a new 997 buyer at $200,000. A few years ago Wiedeking was quoted as saying the "typical" 911 buyer had a HHI of $310,000 w/the typical Boxster buyer at an average of $243,000.

Regardless of the buyer's income, why do you care if someone spends $70k, $80k or $100k of their money on a car that in your irrelevant opinion "isn't worth it?"

Other than a larger motor and rear seats for your double amputee friends, what else makes the 997 much better?

The looks #1 ......... the Cayman looked small sitting next to the 997 with its big hips and Phatt stance . I think the TechArt 20's with the right tires lowered will help a lot . Have you driven both cars back to back looks like this car has the potential to be outrageous with the right , wheels , brakes , engine , suspension it is mid engine . Seems like Porsche kind of held it back and that is a shame . If a 100k Cayman was available and it was more fun and faster than the 997 it would be a great addition to the Porsche line , like a little CGT and the more I look at it the more I think it could be . The Techart wheels and body kit bring this car to life , why could Porsche not give it a geat look like this .. again they went out of their way to keep it the little brother to the 997 and when you look at this shot everything changes http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?i...aymans44ne.jpg

Just a difference of opinions here I guess.

I for one think the Cayman looks much better than the 997......more compact, sporty, and youthful.......just what I was looking for, the 997 is boring next to it IMO. It also doesn't need anything from TechArt IMO to make it come to life, it is beautiful as is. All the addons just make it look tacky to me,......again, just personal preference I guess.

I could care less what soemone else does with their money. The thread starter was questioning why the Cayman was worth $70K for reasons he articulates. I believe the car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If you are willing to fork over $70K then its worth $70K. I wouldn't pay $70K but maybe $55K because deprecitation actually matters to me more than getting something new on the market. Even at $55K for the performance on paper there are far better options.
But as far as average Porsche buyer incomes, Its no more than common sense: HHI incomes, disposable incomes etc., does indeed influence the pricing of a product. Of course everyone pays the same price but like with any business the seller knows what his customer is willing to pay because he/she knows the product will satisfy the buyer and more importantly because the buyer who has interest in this particular brand of product can afford it!
The luxury goods marketplace is full of people who like the thread starter scratch their heads as to how the seller gets what they a$k for.
Its not just about the product its also to do with the buyer.

A much better car? By whose standard? Even Porsche realized that they had to hold this new beast back. Some magazines rate the Boxster S as the handling standard and consider the Cayman superior. Guarantee that the base 911 vice Cayman S is drivers difference on the track.
